So Extended BFers, when was the last time you bf in public?

As it seems we need a bit of public support on this one.

Me, on Friday night. Went to a family friendly Italian in York. Our starters was taking ages - well over 20 mins - and dd was hungry and getting wired and was about 5 seconds from kicking off, big stylee.

I offered and she agreed. Fed for 5 mins on both sides then calmly sat down and waited - the food arrived 3 mins later.

I think one lady noticed and seemed to give me a smile afterwards. I think everyone would have noticed if i had waited till she was screaming like a banshee.

Yesterday, at the Look Out Discovery Centre. three times once in the cafe and twice in a little book corner with a sofa.
it was quite nice to sit down actually
I am never sure if people notice now because I make a point of not catching anyone's eye when I do it - I read a book or talk directly to dd1 or dh or a friend or look at my phone or look out of the window or anything - it is a defence mechanism. when I have finished I will often strike up a conversation though

Nice idea for a thread.

Yesterday, at the cinema. We were watching Ratatouille but dd2 (2.6) started getting restless so I fed her for a couple of minutes to calm her down.

I don't very often feed her in front of strangers, though, because feeds are mostly limited to waking/naptime/bedtime these days.

knifewieldingtoddler · 28/10/2007 19:12

i tend to look into the middle distance to avoid people's eyes but on friday night dh was sitting across the table from me and well, apart from looking at him instead, I don't think anyone would ever say anything when he is there as dh = brick shithouse.

the most memorable time before that was last August when she vomited in my hand and everywhere else as she was carsick. she never vomits and was very upset at doing so. a few miles later we stopped at a Welcome Break to clean up. I bf in full view of hundreds. She wearing nothing more than her nappies and me in a t-shirt and shorts.

I would have loved to get inside the brains of those who walked passed and noticed. Dd is currently 30 months old.

About 2 years ago . Ds was 3 this week.

beautifuldays · 28/10/2007 19:24

yesterday in ikea, but i don't think i currently 'count' as extended as dd is only 9 months old. i fed ds til he was 2 and used to feed him whenever/wherever - but that was 18months ago now...

TheUnholyTrinityRhino · 28/10/2007 19:31

Its lovely to hear you all talking like this
I wouldn't call myself an extended breatfeeder mainly because I'm not entirely sure that means
I would guess from what is said on mumsnet that IM not though
I fed dd1 till she was 14 months and publically at that age too.
I stopped because I had severe pnd and needed to take anti d's and was told that I had to stop. I don't entirely agree with that now but anyway
dd2 went off the breast eventhough I really tried to encourage her at 9 months so that wasn't long at all.

Gecko will be 9 months on the 7th of november and is still very much bf out and about and I will continue to do it out and about and wherever and whenever for as long as she and I want to.

notnowbernard · 28/10/2007 19:39

I wanted to ask, (v.genuine question!) at what age is child considered to be bf extended-ly(?!)

Last time for me, dd2 was about 12m - not sure this is considered 'extended'.

She's 14m now and only ever wants a feed in the morning now. (Which is lovely)

At the pool/pool bar/restuarant and anywhere she fancied it 2 weeks ago in Turkey on our hols. I do feed anywhere and anywhere mind you. Dd2 is only 15 months tho.

I bf ds2 till he was 3 and fed him out and about till he stopped. Did get funny looks when i was still bfing dd1 when i was 7/8 months pg with dd2 lol.

Never had a comment in all the time i bf,did have looks but i never gave a shit tbh so it's been mostly positive for me thankfully.

Plan to bf for as long as she wants to. Dd1 who is 3.3 now has the odd bedtime feed too but i would feed her outside too if i had done the tandem feeding.

Can't remember but certainly within the last year - she's 4 yrs 3 months. I didn't feed her recently in the school playground when she asked, but felt a little sad that I felt unable to comfort her in that way (she was very tired having just started big school, she settled for a cuddle instead)

CantSleepWontSleep · 28/10/2007 22:29

Last time in public public was on holiday in September (in France), mostly on the beach. DD doesn't generally bf during the day, but she was going through a 'phase', and wanting it lots.

terramum · 29/10/2007 00:31

DS (3.3 years) last fed in public 2 weeks ago in the men's shoe department of House of Fraser in Solihull

berolina · 29/10/2007 01:16

Yesterday. Was out with dh, dses and friends and ds1 (2.5yo) wanted milk. He hasn't asked when out and about for months, so was a little taken aback, but oh well. He fed for maybe 30 sceonds, came off, fed for another 30 secs or so, then he was happy.

(Also bf ds2 on train and at church today, but as he's only 5 weeks it's not really extended).

berolina · 29/10/2007 01:16

Oh, we were on train when I fed ds1, btw.

nappyaddict · 29/10/2007 01:18

slacker

berolina · 29/10/2007 01:18

notnow - general definition of 'extended' in our culture is 12 months +, I think.

berolina · 29/10/2007 01:19

nappyaddict - at first I thought you were calling me a slacker, maybe for not having fed ds1 in public for months! PMSL!

haditfortheday · 29/10/2007 09:51

Saturday while out for lunch, but didnt realise that I was facing everyone! But DS is only 12 months so not sure of that counts. Got an odd look though as when DS had finished DH passed me DD for her feed! ( shes only 3 weeks old & the look on this old chaps face was a picture!!- it was very much a whose next moment!!)

mawbroooooooooon · 29/10/2007 13:37

At the weekend. DS has just turned two and we feed any time, any place, except for on the bus. My reason for not feeding on the bus is that I am strapped into the back carrier and have the nappies etc in a waist bag, so it is a real faff to get undone, otherwise I would happily feed him on the bus.
