13 weeks old - How can I get him to take a bottle?

Hi ladies,

I have breastfed my 13 week old since birth and only tried a bottle once. I stupidly thought that he would take one when I wanted him to and I am supposed to be going out for the day on Sunday.
Turns out that he is flatly refusing the bottle (I feel so foolish!) of expressed milk. My Mum has tried, my husband has tried and no-one can get him to take it.

Any tips? Ideas?

Many thanks.

different shape bottle? (borrow off friends)
open cup?

Myfairone, we had success with the Playtex bottle with NaturalLatch teat. Some people on here have also said the Tommee Tippee closer to Nature one is good as well. A neighbour of ours who had bf 5 children also suggested wrapping the bottle in one of your bras {not laundered!} to give the baby the right scent! I found with ds3 who was very stubborn, that I had to go 4 hours without feeding him before he would take the bottle. Seems cruel but it did work in the end.

An avent cup with the valve taken out can work as well. Also the Medela Special Needs feeder ( formerly known as the Haberman feeder) because it responds to the weakest suck and you can actually squeeze the teat to push the milk in if they refuse to suck.

Can you tell I used to spend a lot of time on bottle refusing threads?

SorcerersCameroonianApprentice · 26/10/2007 19:23

dd and ds1 refused to take an (Avent) bottle and I had to resort to an Avent cup at 5 months, ds2, now 5 months and exclusively bf at the time, took a bottle straight away using a Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature about a month ago. Have you tried them?

Mojomummy · 28/10/2007 23:38

I (halfheartedly) tried all bottles, DD2 was having none of it, so I gave up & am still BF dd (15mths) now.

With DD1 she had a NUK bottle but she was also used to a NUK dummy for her sleeps & the teats are the same shape, which may have made it easier for her.

Could you try a NUK or some sort of soft sippy teat ?

have you tried the tommee tippee closer to nature bottles or the nuk teats?

damn ... should have read the thread before i posted!!

also the boots orthodontic teats are meant to be good for mixed fed babies.
