Anyone exclusively pumped from start?

That basically,

Has anyone pumped breast milk from the start as opposed to breast feed directly?

Last child I tried to give her the Colostrum but just didn't get on with BF, so she exclusively bottle fed. I have no desire to breast feed but I wonder if pumping is possible from the start?

I've not done it but hopefully someone will be along soon who has OP.

Have you had a read of this on Kellymom? It might have some tips Smile

Yes. Twice, for a year each. Hard work but can be done.

I had to for DD who was too early to feed. She did eventually get on the breast after a few months.

I'd recommend a hospital grade double pump; start as soon as possible after the birth; and do it as much as possible with her actually on you. They say the 2am pump is really important in boosting supply.

I did for my first son. 6 months he was exclusively fed breast milk from a bottle because he had tongue tie that I knew about but went undiagnosed by a professional for 8 months.

Very hard work. I had to set my alarm in the night to pump to keep up supply. Pumping every 3 hours. It was worth it though and although a lot of people thought I was mad, I was proud of my achievement.

My LO is 7 weeks and I've been pumping from the start as we struggle with the latch.

I thought my supply was too low so pumped every two hours during day time and did a power pump twice a day for 3 days (20 min pump, 10 min break, 10 min pump, 10 min break, 10 min pump)

Would recommend a double electric pump, I just use a double wire plugged into my single tommee tippee pump that I got on sale for £65

I did, with both dc. Both were able to latch on directly at about 3m. I know nipple shields are frowned upon but they helped me tremendously.

I did for DD1, I think I took temporary leave of my senses.

You need a good double pump, and time to sit down for half an hour at least 4-6 times a day.

I managed with DC1 as she was my first, I wouldn’t have done it with my second. Luckily I knew more the second time round and managed to get her to latch.

In my opinion nipple shields are criminally underused. I’d probably have been able to direct feed DC1 with them. DC2 used them until about 4 months. As she was prem I was recommended them in hospital.

If it means breast milk is facilitated, why the hell not?

tinkywinkyshandbag · 31/12/2020 13:55

@Marmite27 exactly the same here

The pump I had was a spectra s1. It worked like a charm. Did me and four friends before it was donated to the local breastfeeding group.

I exclusively pumped for months as my daughter had a tongue tie and never took to feeding direct. I second the recommendation of renting a hospital grade double pump (I liked the Ardo Carum best although I tried a Medela too). I also recommend seeking the advice of an IBCLC qualified lactation consultant as they are far more knowledge than the average midwife (in my experience). Best of luck to you!
