hi, can anybody tell me if they are taking flouxetine the anti-depressent whilst breastfeeding?
I used to take 20mg a day for PMT but came off it when I found out I was pregnant. Now 4 months into breastfeeding I am back to my old grouchy self, and wanting to rip off dp head off every weekend. When I took 20mg in the past it managed to control my outbursts. Dont want to go to doctors if I can help it, as I dont want a lecture... I have spare packet in cupboard

Thanks in advance

Quote from Breastfeeding Network

Fluoxetine (Prozac) - has a half life of 2-3 days and may in theory, lead to accumulation and high levels in the infant. It reaches a peak after 1.5 - 12 hours. It has an active metabolite.. Adverse effects including increased irritability and colic have been reported. One anecdotal report linking severe colic with the use of fluoxetine has been published. The original suggestion of irritability came from one mother and baby pair where the father of the baby was a paediatrician. The mother and the child's paediatrician reported no change in behaviour although the father believed it to be more irritable. Hale reports personal communications indicating that it can cause sedation and even coma if used throughout pregnancy and then in subsequent lactation. He has recommended that if it is used in pregnancy that the mother is changed onto another SSRI in the 2 weeks before expected delivery. It is suggested that use in mothers of babies more than 4 months old would appear to be safe.
