5 week old taking an hour to feed on bottle

DS takes an hour to feed, I mentioned it to the midwife and she said to go up a teat so I've been using medium flow with him. He started medium flows about 3 weeks and at first it was great he was feeding really quickly however now he's taking over an hour again. He stops every 5ml for a break and he sucks the teat so slowly and sometimes falls asleep but that's not usually an issue. Any advice of what to do?

Is he gaining weight ok? Infant feeding is such a head wrecker!

ndsx · 11/12/2020 22:11

Also after every time I burp him he starts making this squirming noise when I go to give him the bottle back and moving his arms around but he never burps a second time just repeatedly does it and farts? We thought he had wind so we told the midwife and she said try infacol but it just made him worse.

Yes I think so he doesn't vomit alot but he has 3 times in total once today. He also spits constantly whilst he's feeding and he went through a faze where he had to be upright otherwise he would be fussy. He doesn't like being fed upright though.

I can't quite recall as it was 2 years ago but that sounds familiar to me. Very often DS would fall asleep before finishing his bottle. If he's gaining weight I wouldn't worry but the reflux thing might need looking at?

ndsx · 11/12/2020 22:29

What sort of things can they do for reflux?

OP posts:

He also wakes up wiggling and crying but then goes back to sleep

I'm thinking that he may just not be wanting any more of the bottle when he takes an hour. As he's a good weight and was so big when he was born, maybe he just isn't that hungry. The main thing is that he is gaining weight, so I would try to relax about it. If hasn't finished the bottle after 20 mins or so then just stop feeding him until the next time. He should eventually settle into needing feeds every 3 hours or so, but it can take about 3 months to get into a routine.

ndsx · 11/12/2020 22:45

Yes maybe you're right but I let him stop a couple times and he cries an hour or two later for more so I'm a bit stuck

I was going to suggest silent reflux. From everything you have have said, he has classic symptoms (all three of mine have had it!)

My Dd is 16 weeks now, She's a lot better since she's been on gaviscon. I'd speak to your GP.

So is silent reflux the same as the reflux that makes babies bring up their milk constantly? My dd2 had reflux so badly they had to put a camera in to see what was going on. She couldn't keep much down at all and wasn't gaining weight. They discovered the valve at the top of her stomach wasn't developed, but as soon as she was put on Gaviscon sachets all was fine again. Smile. Yes, I agree the OP should maybe see what the doctor thinks.
WankPuffins · 13/12/2020 01:27

Yes that's right.

Silent reflux they don't bring back most of every feed. They just have the pain and bring up small amounts of acid.

Two of mine had classic reflux where there were rivers of sick. Dd doesn't have huge amounts of sick, just the acid reflux and pain. Gaviscon helped but she still drinks half the recommended amount of formula.
