9 month old flat out refusing bottle even when hear tummy rumbling!!

DS is 9 months and he’s teething pretty badly. One too tooth broke through last week and it looks like the second will do any day. Since this he had been fussy with his bottles but in the last 2 days has got even worse- he will now clamp his mouth shut and refuse to open it even when it’s been hours since his last feed and I can hear his stomach literally growling! He’s not the best eater with solids either so I find it really worrying.

Last 2 days his morning bottle has been a complete no go, no matter what little tricks I’ve tried. His afternoon and bedtime one I’ve managed to get him to eventually take through a mixture of baby YouTube on my phone and tricking him into opening his mouth- for a toy/ dummy etc but he’s getting increasingly savvy to this. I also hate that I’m letting him watch videos to drink his milk but I’m so worried as I think if I didn’t persuade him he would literally go all day with nothing. He’s had 18oz the last 2 days instead of his usual 27oz.

Can anyone relate? Any tips? Is it just a phase or should I be really worried!

Have you given him any pain medication? Nurofen and anbesol liquid work best.

Yep all the above is even with nurofen, teething crystals/ gel etc. And when I can trick him to open his mouth and get the bottle in there he will then drink the whole 9oz like it’s fine Confused

It's good that you've tried nurofen, it's the best fir dental pain. Are you able to use a teething gel at all?

Try not to stress too much tonight, he'll make up for the missed milk when he feels a bit better.

I'd give him nurofen as soon as he wakes in the morning then Trey him with some chunks of cool cucumber to chew on, a cool, clean wet flannel is also good as it cooks the gums.

If he's still struggling tomorrow morning though, I'd ask the GP to check his ears, throat and stomach.

We used to keep a couple of empty bottles in the fridge for when teething was at its peak. My DD preferred the initial contact with the colder teat. It might be worth a try. And also slightly cooler milk? Not cold but not the usual warm milk either?

We also used to keep some teething toys and baby spoons in the freezer to give to her before a feed. It helped her loads to just take the bottle and numb the pain a little for when she drank.

Try using nurofen and anbesol liquid together. Anbesol liquid is amazing, I’m used it myself.

@JiltedJohnsJulie thanks will give that a whirl- I considered the gp but then thought that if it was ears etc then he wouldn’t drink it once I get it in his mouth whereas he’s fine to drink after the initial fight.

@princessbananahammock252 great tips thanks will give it whirl
