Bloody HVs. They don't have the faintest idea about the importance of fresh lemmings. Mine told me I should use dried lemming powder, ffs!

hunker - I was very at the recipe thing but thought I would post it anyway to see what other people thought - was surprised at it being suggested by a mw though!

Re the bottlefeeder - I was kicking myself afterwards for not suggesting she went along to the b/fing support group - but I was getting very strong "I have no confidence in my mothering skills" vibes from her so didn't feel I could say anything to her without her potentially taking it as a criticism

Incidentally (sorry for the hijack tutter!) the GP I saw pre innoculations a) told me not to wean before 6 months b) asked if I was going to continue b/fing beyond six months and c) when I said I was aiming for one year, said "you know there's no upper limit, you can do it for as long as you both want" - nice to come across such positivity! (mind you he was quite young)

err...how ridiculous. Who'd be gullible enough?

Special prayers?!

I actually think even the "it's important breastfeeding mothers eat five portions of fruit and vegetables a day" can make it seem to sodding hard for some women - it's a guilt trip and it goes like this:

HV (or NHS leaflet): "You know you need to eat healthily to ensure your baby gets the best nutrition from your milk?"

New mum says: "Er..."
New mum thinks: "Fuck. Why isn't cake a vegetable?"

In reality, everybody should be eating 5 portions of fruit and veg, not just bfing mums. I think it's a control thing - lots of HVs seem to like to know how many ounces a baby's drinking - they can't find out with bfing, so they have to bang on about the mother's diet instead.

Or something. I just thought arse to it all and ate biscuits. Actually, that's my position on many things

"I just thought arse to it all and ate biscuits"

I think that should be your epitaph hunker

Can I just say apropos of, well nothing really, that I saw a woman b/fing on the train the other day - she'd been looking rather panickedly for somewhere a bit more 'private' and hadn't found one while her baby screamed, so she sat down and fed her baby opposite an older woman who was being very nice to her; and I went up and told her how lovely it was to see someone breastfeeding in public. She was dead chuffed. And I felt like a Nice Person .

CAKE ISN'T A VEGETABLE????

OMG
