Breastfeeding and.... Christmas

Margo34 · 04/12/2020 18:40

My baby is 2 months old and EBF responsively.
I want to enjoy a tipple or 2 (or more...) at Christmas, what's the best way to go about this? Will I need to stick to only 1 or 2 drinks the whole day? Or if I start collecting and freezing BM, how much might I need? Have I left it too late to start a freezer stash?
Then there's the questions about actually feeding the expressed milk....how much would I feed to baby in a bottle?! I've no idea how much she consumes as she's EBF!
Sorry for all the questions!

Look up jack Newman, the amount of alcohol that goes into your breast milk is negligible. Drinking and looking after your baby is more or less the same risks for bottle fed and breast feeding mothers- the amount you consume impacts your ability to mind them rather than your milk if that makes sense?

HappyAsASandboy · 04/12/2020 18:44

It is fine to drink responsibly despite breastfeeding.

Information here - www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/alcohol/

Arosadra · 04/12/2020 18:45

It’s fine to drink op, only a negligible amount of alcohol gets into breast milk. Just drink as normal and feed on demand. I’ve bf four and all was fine, plus trained as a peer supporter and the breastfeeding consultant who trained us also said no need to limit alcohol other than remaining in a state where you can safely look after the baby! Normal drinking is fine to enjoy.

Sexnotgender · 04/12/2020 18:46

It’s absolutely fine to have a drink and breastfeed as long as you follow safe sleeping guidelines.

So as long as I am still level headed to care for baby I can enjoy a drink throughout the day? Like... a fizz with brekkie, couple of glasses of wine with dinner, sherry or another glass of wine in the evening....?
I'm a clueless FTM can you tell!!

If you sober enough to hold and look after a baby, your fine to feed. The amount of alcohol in milk is tiny.

the amount you consume impacts your ability to mind them rather than your milk if that makes sense? Definitely works like that. Can remember dropping DD out of the bed at about 8 months, think it was my birthday. Luckily I'd already dropped a pillow and she fell on that. Sorry DD Grin

Have a drink! Just no bedsharing (especially accidental).

squee123 · 04/12/2020 21:46

Just bear in mind that if you've not drunk in a long time that a couple of glasses at lunch may well floor you! Also no cosleeping at all when you have had a drink and be very careful to avoid situations where you could accidentally fall asleep with her on you.

Otherwiss crack on Xmas Smile

This amount will floor you if you've not drunk in a while. Make them max half glasses (like 50ml) and drink slowly. Make breakfast a mimosa (50/50 juice and champagne). Possibly dilute wine with sparkling water to help.

That is true actually. I didn't have a drink until DC1 was a year old. We were camping and I fell in some nettles after 2 smallish drinks.

Not a pretty sight or a pleasant night with nettle rash.

Fab, thanks. All advice duly noted!

Agree with posters. But if you want to pump or express it's definitely not too late. Depending on supply and how much time and how often you express a day, you can manage two 150ml bottles day or even one. Then plan for 150 to 250 every two to three hours, taking into consideration when you will start drinking. So plenty of time. Otherwise just enjoy yourself as others have said

Littlelot · 07/12/2020 12:44

I would also add if you want to express and use a bottle it might be worth checking that your baby is happy to do this. My DD is also 2months and last week I tried to express and give her a bottle with some medicine mixed in and she wouldn’t/couldn’t drink from it and just got cross with it. On the other hand previously my DS would have happily guzzled from a bottle or breast.
