EBF to formula - dodgy tummy?

I've started to introduce formula to my 7 week old. Only an ounce or two at night but since I have she's been having explosive runny poos! Obviously her tummy hasn't been used to formula and I am vegan so don't eat a lot of the stuff that's in formula so it could be that her tummy just hasn't been introduced to thinks like CMP and fish oil

Regardless of diet, did anyone see a difference in stools going from EBF to formula and if so did it eventually settle down? I am planning on transitioning her over to just FF over the next couple of months

Formula gave my boy horrific poos! Had wanted to do combi feeding but his tummy could never take it. Formula is mainly dried cows milk and oils (fish, palm, veg etc) so maybe one of these is a trigger point? My boy never took to cows milk either, had to use oat milk. Sorry no answer but just sharing experience

@Autumnismyseason thanks for sharing. Did you just stick to breast feeding then? I'm thinking I might get hypoallergenic milk and start her on that first to ease her into formula as they cow milk protein is more broken down and easily digestible

I did end up breast feeding only in the end. Had wanted a bit more ‘freedom’ to be able to leave him with a bottle and spend time with my older one but he never took to a bottle either. Sorry I wish I could be more help. Most people find formula helps their baby sleep better and put on weight but has the opposite on my boy.

Possibly try changing brand

Nutritionally they are all the same but we found with our DD that cow and gate gave her awful poos.

Hipp and Aldi both ok.

(she was combi fed)

I would suggest Kendamill formula, its was much better for DS's stomach.

I've just had a look at the kendamil one and it looks really good. I might give this one a go. Sounds like it will also be gentler on her little tummy

Could be cow's milk allergy, explosive poos are a symptom (they were for both my CMPA babies). More info at www.allergyuk.org/information-and-advice/conditions-and-symptoms/469-cows-milk-allergy

Google CPMA (Cows Milk Protein Allergy). It can cause tummy upsets in babies. My son was EBF and when I introduced normal formula at 6 months he was really sick. I’ve just started using Nannie Care (It’s a goats milk formula) and he’s fine. It’s meant to be much easier to digest for babies who can’t tolerate cows milk.
Speak to your health visitor or GP as there could be other reasons why he’s pooing. But if his tummy has never had any dairy and suddenly it’s getting a full bottle of cow’s milk formula, it could be unsettling it.

lola
It's good that your baby tolerates goat's milk but the proteins in it are very similar to cow's milk proteins, so a lot of babies with CMPA will react to goat's milk too.
If baby does have CMPA you can ask the GP to prescribe hypoallergenic formula.

BumbleNova · 30/11/2020 15:42

Sounds like a cows milk protein allergy to me. I don't think you can buy hypoallergenic formula you need a GP prescription. All animal milks are a problem usually if it's CMPA including goat.

Your baby has probably been fine with your breast milk because you are vegan. I've had to cut all dairy from my diet.

@NameChange30 he’s 9 months now and only having one bottle of the goats milk formula per day, I’m still BF the rest. I agree, any change in milk should be discussed with your GP. I spoke this through with my GP at the time. He mentioned that the reaction could be the same but to give it a try. It seems to be working for us. I’ve heard from quite a few people that their babies who reacted to cow’s milk seemed to be fine on goats milk.
