I he still getting nutrition at eleven months?

My Son is still breastfeeding twice a day at eleven months.

A friend told me the other day that the only benefit to this is comfort and that he is getting no food.

I am really concerned about this, as I thought it was filling his belly as well. He does not like formula so this is all he gets.

I had his year check the other day and he had lost a few ounces, please could someone advise me if my friend is correct and whether I should supplement his milk

Thank you x

Bfing twice a day at eleven months is great. Perfect in fact. The best possible milk he could have.

Your friend is talking nonsense (sorry!)

As for him losing a few ounces -how is his health generally? Losing a few ounces in a healthy baby who has a good appetite isn't usually a problem.

if you were eating an apple once a day, would your friend tell you to give it up as you were not really getting any nutrition from it and it was just for comfort?

what about if it was just a cup of tea you were having once a day, you know, just for comfort.

swim?

He had a cold recently - got over it and today started a new cold!! and he has just started to crawl so moving around alot.

He is healthy, although at birth he contracted strep b from me which was not picked up until he had lumbar puncture. I do not know if this has any lasting effects

I dont think my friend meant anything from telling me she really thought she was right - in fact she breastfed hers till 18 months

Your friend is a fool, and it sounds like you breastfeeding is some kind of issue for her

keep up the good work

FrannyandZooey · 19/10/2007 18:48

cross posts I was quite wrong there then!

let me get you a link

FrannyandZooey · 19/10/2007 18:49

look this link is for TODDLERS

the benefits to a baby are even greater, I believe. Check the nutritional part especially - see how much he is getting from it! What does your friend think is in there, water?

FrannyandZooey · 19/10/2007 18:50

this is the bit

"In the second year (12-23 months), 448 mL of breastmilk provides:
29% of energy requirements
43% of protein requirements
36% of calcium requirements
75% of vitamin A requirements
76% of folate requirements
94% of vitamin B12 requirements
60% of vitamin C requirements
-- Dewey 2001 "

It's totally normal for him to be getting a couple of colds at this time of year.

1legmummy · 19/10/2007 18:58

Blimey!! thanks so much I will continue then - and yes I think she does think it is like water.

Oh well, she means well.

Thankyouxx

In what possible way could he not be getting anything from it? It's not like the milk spontaneously turns into water once they get past six months... It's milk, for goodness' sake.

What a very odd comment from your friend.

When was he last weighed? I have a lot of friends (many of whom formula fed) whose DCs didn't gain weight, or actually lost some, between 9 and 12 months as they were getting more active.

1legmummy · 19/10/2007 19:02

I had not thought of it like that - but I will from now on, I love it but also it helps me, I am an amputee (my name is the clue!)
We have had to rent a house whilst our bungalow is being converted for my wheelchair and its been a complete godsend

Thanks for all your advice - it made me feel much better

He was weighed last week and before that two weeks prior and had lost 2 ounces but the last time I had him weighed before that was 4 months ago!

They are not worried about him and now that has been explained I am not either, he has lost because he is more active.
