Crying during evening feeds

Hi,

Wondering if anyone has any ideas, I’m googled out!

2 week old Formula fed (cow and gate) baby girl (3 weeks on Friday), currently feeding every 3 hours due to jaundice. Has passed birth weight.

She has been screaming during the evening and night feeds, she pulls away from the bottle crying and screaming, but is clearly hungry as cries for it when I take it away. Claws at her face and the bottle when drinking and cries/screams. She occasionally spits/throws up a little bit after feeding (sometimes even hours after) even though we burp her every few ounces - she has no issue bringing up burps and keep her upright for a while after feeds. She sometimes sounds a bit raspy after the evening feeds.

During the day this isn’t an issue.

Google and a search on MN points me to the direction of silent reflux or colic. We’ve started her on Infacol to which we haven’t seen much improvement yet (it’s been a few days).

The last few days we’ve also noticed that she’s pooing less (has had one big poo every day instead of smaller ones throughout the day) and this is following hours of straining and grunting through the night when asleep. Sometimes the straining and grunting leads to some farts. Her poos are still yellow/mustard and soft. Could this be trapped wind (even though she easily burps) or related to silent reflux or colic?

Any ideas? I feel like there’s a lot going on for her at the moment but can’t figure out what the issue is.

Colic

JiltedJohnsJulie · 25/11/2020 07:24

It could be colic as the PP especially as she's ok with other feeds.

Have a read of these articles from Ask Dr Sears on colic and how to survive it Thanks

That sounds tough. You'll be exhausted.
Your post reads like my first couple weeks with my wee one, she was clearly in pain for feeds especially at late afternoon and night. Tried infacol but it made no difference. My DD was farting like you wouldn't believe and very congested with stuffy nose. I had cows milk intolerance as a baby so spoke to GP and HV who agreed it sounded like silent reflux due to that. She was given pepti 1 formula and within 48 hrs the farting and snorting stopped. was another 4-5 weeks and some medication to help reflux but the crying at feeds stopped after that.
It's so hard to know what is causing the pain/distress etc, is it colic or reflux or just that time of day etc etc...in our case it was easier to identify as I had cows milk issues as a baby.
My advice would be to keep a note of all concerns and chat through with HV maybe?

Thank you. Yes, my next step is to speak to the HV about it but worried they’ll just dismiss it as colic when it could be something else.

I worried about that too Fudge, luckily mine was fantastic. I would keep doing all you're doing and note everything down, trust your instinct and fingers crossed things settle soon

If it's every evening at the same time it's likely to be witching hours.

Very normal and nothing to worry about. They grow out of it around 3/4 months. Until then, offer milk or a dummy, cuddle and rock through the evening.

Eat before it starts and put your feet up and rest in the late afternoon so you're ready for it
