Reflux/carobel/anti reflux milk

Hi all. My LG is 3 months and has had awful reflux the last 2 weeks. She has been FF from birth and thriving but is throwing up every feed and has awful wind recently. Does anyone know if the formula reflux milks are just normal plus carobel? Gaviscon is doing sod all and she is losing weight. Any advice please 😩

Yes they usually just have carob added.

Has your doctor looked into antacids?

I really feel for you. My Ds was the same - he projectiled every feed, but it was 18 years ago and no one cared. Just said he would grow out of it.

Sorry pressed post too soon.

My Dd is also 3 months. She has reflux too but thankfully (?!) silent so no vomit. She’s on gaviscon which seems to help but is also not gaining weight as she takes so little formula. Worried here too.

Hi @WankPuffins (love the name btw 🤣) no gp said gaviscon is first line treatment but offered sod all else. We have started anti reflux milk today and stopped gaviscon to see if that helps but it’s so thick 😩 literally don’t know what to do for the best!

It’s so hard isn’t it.

I’d push for other Medication or insist on being referred to a ped. Or if it’s really bad go to A&E - you’ll be seen by paediatrics and prescribed something. Poor little thing. I wish I’d done that with Ds. It’s so distressing seeing them be violently sick.

Yes the anti reflux milk is so thick. I tried Dd and she couldn’t get any out. She doesn’t have a great suck so she’s already on the fast flow teats for normal milk. She just couldn’t get the reflux milk out.

DS is 8 months now but at about 3 months his reflux was really bad. He dropped 5 centiles in total, was loosing weight and bringing up most of every feed. He ended up admitted to hospital, I had to stop breastfeeding as they put him on high caloris milk, omeprazole and carobel in the milk and this was honestly a game changer, Within 48 hours we could see a difference. In three days he gain a big amount of weight (the dietitian was very impressed), he is still on Omeprazole and carobel now and don’t get me wrong he is still sick, some days worse than others but he is growing and thriving which is what’s important.

Hey

What anti reflux milk are you using?

My son is 8wks old and has silent reflux... clear liquid projecting out (even +1hr after feeding), unsettled and grizzly, the worst grunting and squirming when he’s on his back, hard swallowing and holding his breath for a few secs.

He was prescribed gaviscon, which helped a bit with the clear liquid coming up, but all the other symptoms remained. So yesterday we switched to cow and gate anti reflux milk. I’m using Mam bottles and size 2 teat. It is thicker but is coming through fine. The trick is to NOT add to boiling water and DONT shake too much.

My son (8wks) seems to be drinking it fine but he’s had 4 x bright yellow runny poos in the past 12hrs.

Has anyone else switched and seen an improvement?

The grunting at night is unbearable. Does the anti reflux milk stop this in time?

Oh my god @MummySept2020 you've just described my 12 week old perfectly.

She's been on gaviscon for ten days. It has stopped the clear liquid but she's still uncomfortable.

I haven't switched to anti reflux milk because it's just thicker. It doesn't actually do anything for the acid, just stops it coming back up. But the gaviscon does that as it thickens in the stomach anyway.

She's got her vaccinations with the dr tommorow I'm going to ask about antacids.

With my Dd it's the poor feeding that comes from the pain I think. I struggle to get 16-20 oz a day into her. That's all she's had for the past 8 weeks.

MummySept2020 · 18/11/2020 18:36

Sorry to hear that. It’s awful isn’t it!?

I read on another feed that the anti reflux milk stopped someone’s little one’s grunting and uncomfortableness, so thought I would give it a go. At least I can then rule it out if it doesn’t work.

I guess every baby is different and each will respond to different ‘treatments’ differently.

I was just hoping someone would say ‘do this and it will make everything ok’, but I guess that’s unrealistic. I can’t sleep during the night with the grunting so me and my partner are taking it in turns to sleep in the spare room. So at least we’re getting sleep every other night. However, the days where I’ve not had sleep the night before are becoming unbearable. Surely there must be someone that can point us in the right direction.

@1Pinkfluffyelephant Sounds awful. Glad he’s doing better.

Did your little one have any other symptoms? (Grunting, hard swallowing and holding their breath when on their back) and did they go away after the Omeprazole and carobel?

1Pinkfluffyelephant · 18/11/2020 18:53

He used to almost bend him self in half backwards whilst straining and constantly had the hiccups. He was so uncomfortable on his back he has slept on his tummy since around 2 months old and he is sooo much more settled and sleeps soundly (although he was still being very sick). I know tummy sleeping isn’t recommended but as he was so uncomfortable and would gag and choke on his sick when he was on his back I just had to weigh up the risks. The meds and thickener changed everything. He was so much more settled and comfortable but it took about 3 dose increases of omeprazole before it was the right dose for him. They often start on minimal and work up.
