Help needed for super fast let down

Okay, so DD2 is now 10 days old and I have only just started to get engorged and leak.
She will latch on brilliantly, no soreness or anything anymore but she will only suck a couple of times before coming off and fussing.
If she does take a big feed she is gasping and gulping through it to swallow it before she chokes, which she has done, and then it comes back up again with much coughing and spluttering.

I have resorted to swapping sides to try and get the foremilk and worst of it out of the way but am worried she isn't getting enough hindmilk now.

Position wise nothing much helps, I am rather large of nork and nipples point down, she absolutley refuses to feed lying down anymore and freaks out if she is in a sling as she can't pull away and I have to feed holding her upright with her bum between my legs IYSWIM, which is not comfy for either of us.

Any suggestions gratefully received!

What about you lying on your back with her on top?

Or try hand expressing until letdown then attach her afterwards?

Feed from the same side for several feeds and hand express just a little from the other side to relieve you if engorged (if necessary)

Forceful letdown

I resorted to feeding my DD between my legs at around 3 months when I had this problem. Feeding lying down on my side and on her side worked for us. You can feed her with you on your back and her on top of you that should defy gravity a bit. Expressing a bit off before hand (hate expressing so loathe to recommend). I had a terrible time for a couple of months but later on around 10-12 weeks but it resolved itself, they do eventally learn.

I have heard that your let down is faster with subsequent children.

She hasn't got the head strength for feeding on my back (I did this with DD1) she just sort of rolls off sideways!
and I am crap at hand expressing, I have tried expressing some but don't want to unless I really have to as it is still so early, as won't it mess with my supply?

Marmet Hand Expressing

spookthief · 15/10/2007 20:35

I used to hand express into a muslin for a little while before feeding which helped a bit. I found that the second side wasn't so bad as I was leaking like mad from that side while feeding from the first.

Bodkin · 15/10/2007 20:35

When the let-down kicks in, take her off the breast and hold a muslin (or one of those plastic cup thingies if you want to collect the milk) over your boob until the worst of the deluge is over. She might fuss a bit at being removed from the boob, but I used to let mine gnaw on my knuckle a bit while i was waiting for things to subside. By about 10 weeks, she had got the hang of sucking really fast and breathing at the same time, so i don't need to do it anymore. Now she gets a bit fussy while she's waiting for the let-down to kick in!

Agree with all other advice and think what Bodkin suggests will help you. YOu might find you can get enough milk doing this to store and use as a bottle of EBM later on. I have v fast let down and it was hard to start off with but is much easier now DS2 is 5 months (it got easier after about 12 weeks and also after I started feeding from one side only per feed, as suggested on Kellymon).
Good luck.

Wow, that hand excpressing link is great!

I just hope it settles soon, dont want to be fannying about expressing everytime I feed. I cant realy do that in the middle of starbucks!

It does settle soon, and it's a good thing in the long run honest! I fed ds one side at a time for the first 4 months or so because my supply was so plentiful - made for quite short feeds.
