Hi all,
Our LO is now just over 8 weeks old . We started off breastfeeding her and introduced formula not long after and did combination feeding . She tends to cry a lot and then her poos started to become chalky and dry. Still frequent but she struggled that much when passing wind and pooing, we didn't think it was normal..
We were told she had colic, Infacol didn't help so we started using Dentinox which helped but the chalky poo came into play so we suspected lactose intolerance as I am. GP suggested to try lactose free formula milk , which we found it helped and then GP sent her stool sample off for testing and the lab said they can't test it as it has to be there within two hours.
Another GP told us they only had these tests if you were in the hospital as the can send the sample off to lab straight away and never do such tests at the clinics. This GP thinks it's reflux then we put her in reflux milk but she struggled and cried that much whilst drinking it we didn't want to make her drink it after a day or two seeing her crying so, so much.
We spoke to the HV who said she has no experience with lactose intolerance as it is rare in babies and didn't realise it can be genetic. They said that it's up to us how we want to proceed but thinks best to go back on breastmilk so we did.
Spoke to GP again and now they've prescribed her baby Gaviscon. Sometimes ,. I do think she has (silent) reflux, she brings up curdled milk , seems fairly congested , coughs now and again , hiccups, unsettled during feeds at times.
Anyways, now being on breastmilk for over a week now, she's been pooing during every feed, sounds pretty wet along with lots of farts. The poos are also very mucousy and I'm not sure now whether it's diahorrea because baby poos are runny anyways.. she has also started to drool a lot and I have read their saliva glands are developing and this can cause a lot of mucous but I don't know if that's the case. I know I sound like a hypochondriac but as a FTM, I don't know what is normal. Tbh, as every baby is different, hard to say what is normal!
We were also thinking whether she is trying to adjust to breastmilk again and breastmilk is easier to digest so she makes more room for it?
Has anyone had this before and what are your experiences?
