Waking the baby?

Hi all, my little one is 6 days old. She has taken to breastfeeding very well and we are EBF.

She is feeding within the recommended 8-12 times per day - usually more, around 15. She also was weighed at her appt yesterday and has only lost an oz and a half of her birth weight - the midwife was very impressed!

Lately at night, she has started sleeping for longer stints between feeds. I've woken up a few times now and it's been nearly 3.5-4 hours since her last feed. Great for my sleep, but it seems like far too long between feeds. I'm just wondering, in this situation where she's clearly feeding well and gaining weight, would you wake her up or just allow her to wake on her own once she's hungry?

Thank you!

I wouldn't. Enjoy the sleep!

OP would you like to be woken for food? no I did not wake DS

TeddyIsaHe · 14/10/2020 05:47

No don’t wake! Babies will wake up if they’re hungry. It sounds like she’s filling up in the day, enough for her to go overnight. Get some sleep Smile

She'll wake up when she's hungry. Go to sleep! Smile

These are definitely the answers I was hoping to hear 😂 I'll start enjoying these longer snoozes then, for as long as they last!

Opposite opinion here. I would wake her. At 6 days old she's too young to leave for longer than 3 hours. Nudge her gently to rouse her and feed.

FTM here and due in less than 2 weeks. Now I've attended an antenatal class that informed me that a baby shouldn't go longer than 3 hours between feeds. So if their a sleep like pp said to gently wake them up and feed.

Now I'm just more confused more than ever with what to do. Before I got pregnant I would of been of the opinion of not to wake a baby and if their hungry they would wake and tell you.

I guess each mother is different and each baby is different and everyone's experiences are different. is there a right or wrong answer to this?
What evidenced basset research is there?

In the first two weeks I was told to wake them, as when they are too hungry they will get sleepier and sleepier, not more alert. I think you could do a four hour stretch, but no more.
