Update on the situation in the Philippines

Here

Mike Brady, Campaigns and Networking Coordinator at Baby Milk Action,
said:

?The many people and organisations around the world who signed
our petition of solidarity with the people of the Philippines will
welcome the news that the right of the Department of Health to issue
the regulations called for by EO51 has been upheld.

"However, I understand the ruling does strike down the outright
ban on advertising of breastmilk substitutes pointing instead to
improved vetting of these. The proposed outright ban would
undoubtedly have done more to protect infant health, providing
clarity for all involved. The claims made by companies about formula
feeding are shockingly idealizing and we hope that the vetting
committee will take a strong line in prohibiting these claims.

?Health campaigners in the Philippines have had to withstand
great pressure from the industry in putting infant health first and
they are an inspiration to others around the world. It is never easy
holding powerful vested interests to account and this partial victory
offers great encouragement to us all.?

Good on those health campaigners in the Philippines for withstanding pressure from the formula milk industry. It makes me so angry the way breast-feeding is undermined by commercial interests.

It's in my email Inbox waiting to be read, HM.

OldieMum · 11/10/2007 13:54

That's great, hunkermunker. Glad you circulated the original article and petition.

hunkermunker · 11/10/2007 17:15

Yes, thought more people would have it, Suedonim!

PG and OM, yep!

just watched the tribe thing on tv and it was so natural for those mums to feed... breasts all out and hanging about with baby feeding from all angles!

I just wish we could change our society to make it the norm here too.

spookthief · 11/10/2007 22:46

That's a qualified hurrah then . Hope their vetting committee is staffed by informed and unbiased people and isn't too overwhelmed by lobbying from Nestle and chums

hunkermunker · 11/10/2007 23:14

Yes, wondered about the vetting committee myself

It is good news.

I remain sceptical though.
