Tiktok, can you help me with a newborn poo question?!

I need some input from you, because everyone else I've asked is giving me answers that I'm not absolutely happy with!

If a 4-day-old, exclusively breastfed baby hasn't poo-ed for over 48 hours, that's not actually normal, is it? Everyone is giving me (and the mum) the 'it's normal, perfect food, can't get constipated, can go days without poos' line, but I'm sure I've seen you say on here that that advice only applies to older babies, right?

Can you point me in the direction of something I can quote at people? I'm not convinced this mum is getting absolutely spot-on advice, but equally I don't want to go around contradicting people and talking out of my behind if I've misunderstood...

TIA!

48 hours does sound like a long time to me too. Not sure where you'd check though, other than Midwife, health visitor, doctor, NHSdirect etc

My DD (who is 10 weeks today)didn't poo for 6-7 days when she was one week old. l was worried and kept asking my community midwife and health visitor. She was at the time having one top up evening FF of 1-2oz which we have since dropped for exclusive BFing. My DD did not seem to be in any discomfort and was happily passing gas, usually whenever her Dad held her

l was assured that it is quite normal for some babies not to go for this long and it is not considered to be 'constipation' unless when they do go the poo is really hard for them to pass, no chance there when my DD did go it was explosive !

Now she fills her nappy around 4-5 times a week, l guess we are all different.

I think Tiktok said it is quite normal initially then they start crapping for Britiain.

Newborns should be pooing several times a day. Their gut matures after a few weeks and that's when they can go days without pooing. A 4 day old should really be doing yellow or changing poos I think, as it shows that milk is getting into the baby! If you do a search on here for tiktok and yellow poo, then you'll find her advice on the subject, along with lots of 'it's normal for a b/fed baby not to poo' which she always contradicts.

Snaf - your baby (like all newborns) should be pooing every day and it should be turning yellow now. It is a sign feeding is going well when this happens.

If it doesn't happen, then get the feeding checked out - maybe the baby needs to be feeding more effectively, maybe more often.

If you google on 'diaper diary' you'll get a US website which shows pics of what should be happening. NCT also have a sheet called 'what's in a nappy?' with evidence-based info.

No poo is not necessarily a sign feeding needs fixing, but it can be.

Just seen this - thank you

I thought as much, and really wasn't happy with this blanket advice (given to her over the phone, without seeing her or baby, either) that it was 'fine'. Thanks for the links, too.

Anyway, spoke to her today and the baby has pooed nice yellow newborn poo - hurrah! I am seeing her on Friday will be able to see for myself what's going on with the feeding...
