Breastfeeding with inverted nipples

Anyone got any experience of doing this successfully?

Yes, I've seen this plenty of times. As the baby does not actually suck on the nipple it doesn't really matter that they are inverted. The idea is the nipple (inverted or not) is aimed towards the roof of the babies mouth. Could try using a niplette device to draw the nipple out.

Use a nipple shield! Seriously, it will make all the difference. The shield will suction your nipple out.

I know people say oh baby will get it and all that stuff but it is so hard. Anyone I've met with inverted nipples either used the shield or gave up shortly.

My friends nurses for a year. She used nipple shields - sucking pulled nipple into them and made it easier.

I have inverted nipples and breast fed. I used shields for the first 2 kids and struggled with supply, the third child I saw a lactation consultant and breast fed him until he was nearly 3. Its a bit tricky but as he latched the nipple came out.

That's amazing that some people had success! Thank you x

I have one inverted and one normalBlush. I breast fed both kids for 6 months but it was very tough going on the inverted side. I persevered and nipple shields helped a lot.

I had Grade 3 inverted nipples, the worst you can get, literally nothing would suck them out at all. I tried desperately to breastfeed my last baby but nothing worked AT ALL. Even the midwife advised me to give up in the end (in a kind way). I bottle fed and that was OK.

Just wanted to add, even though this is nothing to do with breastfeeding, that i have always had really nice boobs, good shape, no sagging etc but always felt horribly embarrassed about my nipples. Two years ago i had my nipples corrected. Just for vanity reasons really, I just wanted to feel normal. I still get a kick looking down in the shower and seeing that i have actual sticky out nipples now! They are fab! You can no longer breastfeed as they cut the milk ducts, but i couldn't anyway, so it wasn't an issue.

I have always had inverted nipples and breast fed very successfully. I used nipple shields during the first pregnancy but did not bf this baby as she was unable to suck though a traumatic birth.

However I very successfully bf the next two until they were past 1 year. They sucked the nipples out for me!

@Mischance, That's what i had been hoping for, that the baby would suck them out! But not even a Niplette worked on me and i would get a nasty cheesy buildup in the hole from the breast milk, it was so gross. 🤢

Still, at least i knew for sure i couldnt and so didn't beat myself up about not trying hard enough. Love my fab corrected nipples now though!
