My son had horrible reflux. He was EBF and fed every 1-2 hrs until he was 8 mos. Did not sleep except on me!!! It started getting a little better at 8 mos, and then much better by 12 mos. Around 16 mos we took him off all gaviscon and ranitidine and he has been fine since. We avoid sugar apart from fruit. Ice cream is the worst. He’s fine with tomato bases and garlic somehow!!! I was on here every day looking for hope. I know how unbearable it is. Sitting him upright did help, but wasn’t great for me when I wanted to sleep! We had the nuna chair and the Fischer price vibrating chair. He really loved those and it gave me a bit of peace from the crying as he was content in them.

Also in the same boat with a 5 week old who will only sleep on us or in a bouncer, which I feel guilty about but we can’t sleep otherwise.
I’m confused by things online that say reflux is a symptom of other issues and shouldn’t be medicated without resolving other things like mothers diet/latch etc.

My wee guy had it from birth. Bf every 45mins. Purple crying. We got to 8 months before I broke down in front of a trainee health visitor. Wee guy had tongue tie and milk intolerance. It only got better around 1 year. It was hell. I feel for any parent living through it.

Is your baby breastfed? If so, definitely consider your diet. Your little one might have a milk/soya allergy which can be passed through your milk. I have a few friends with reflux issues who have cut out milk/soya from their diet and saw an improvement in their LO almost within a day. It’s quite common in babies under one and can improve with age.

(Soya has a very similar protein make up to milk protein, so if LO is allergic to milk, they are also likely to be allergic to soya. There is soya in lots of things now days, including vegetable spread and most types of bread)

I don’t think they prescribe ranitidine anymore because it prevents the baby from absorbing vitamins and can cause bone density loss and fractures later in life.
I changed my diet and all that, but what it came down to for us was that his glottis was not closing fully, and that was purely developmental. Once his glottis developed, he was much better.
Don’t feel guilty about using bouncers and things, you need a break! It’s all a precarious balance of sanity, happiness, and health!
