Tiktok, munker - or anyone, really! - can you help me with something I heard today?

Spent the morning on post-natal ward today with the hospital's breastfeeding advisor. She mentioned something about a particular newborn 'reflex' and for the life of me I can't remember what it's called.

I'd never heard of it before, but apparently if you stroke the palm of a baby's hand, it can help them open their mouths wider to attach to the breast?! It sounds slightly random to me (and she admitted only limited success with it) but I just thought I would throw it out there and see if anyone else has ever heard of it?

No, never heard of it. Just googled and have found a couple of blogs and other forums that mention it. Will google frantically later

Ooooh, have they given it a name?

How marvellous if it really did work...

There's talk of plantar reflex but that's feet. Also called Babinski reflex.

I naturally held my boys' hands when bfing - loved stroking their teeny fingers. How odd!

hunkermunker · 04/10/2007 18:02

Babinski reflex also feet, btw.

Snaf · 04/10/2007 18:05

No, it wasn't Babinski, 'twas something different (but poss beginning with 'B' )

Will do some serious Googling.
