Dh has three children from previous so he has done things in the past and had certain routines that are different from the way I did it with my dd. We're expecting another child together and have been discussing formula feeding. Dh is convinced you can make up formula in advance and heat up later. He's shown me this Aptamil vid which does say towards the end you can store bottles in the fridge m.youtube.com/watch?v=fNdLUfXhh48
I was always under the impression you could not pre make because of a bacteria and I think there's a link to meningitis? This was why I used pre made formula at night time when it's hard to make up bottles.
Am I wrong?

Ideally they should be made up fresh for each feed. You can make them up with 70⁰C water, cool them and put in the fridge to be used within 24 hours but thats not the optimum way to make them.

chubbyhotchoc · 14/08/2020 21:52

@dementedpixie doesn't warning them up again increase bacteria?

Are you in the UK? That video is from the USA. Look at NHS info for up to date advice if you are in the UK

dementedpixie · 14/08/2020 21:56

making them up with water that is 70⁰C kills the bacteria in the formula. You can then reheat once after storing in the fridge

Coriandersucks · 14/08/2020 21:57

You’re not supposed to but must admit I did for the first four months before I discovered perfect prep machines.

www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/making-up-infant-formula/

www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/infant-formula-questions/ - this page says:

If made-up formula is stored:

  • in a fridge–use within 24 hours
  • in a cool bag with an ice pack–use within4 hours
  • at room temperature–use within2 hours

So it seems you can make them up in advance and reheat but it's not the best way.

Making them up in advance isn't ideal.
I tried not to but did occasionally.

Strangely adcive varies in different countries when it is the same product. I had my babies in Australia and the instructions on the can said you could make them up in advance. I used to make them and store them in the fridge. My DD would happily drink them cold as she got older which made it really easy!

Lockdownseperation · 15/08/2020 19:50

Yes you can.

NaturalStudy · 15/08/2020 19:53

As PP above says - NHS website says you can premake if stored in the fridge.

CornishTiger · 15/08/2020 19:56

It used to be common place. As did lots of things eg baby rice in bottles and rusks etc.

Research are indicated that formula should be made up as and when for safer outcomes. As with all feeding methods information evolves over time.

Just because DH might have had no issues with previous feeding methods doesn’t mean you shouldn’t follow new guidelines.

chubbyhotchoc · 15/08/2020 20:53

@CornishTiger I've said similar to him but he just doesn't seem to get it!

We had to make them up
In advance as we added colief which needed at least half an hour to work. The NHS website and the colief website advised you could do so provide you stored in fridge for up
To 24 hours. Not ideal but there really wasn't any alternative for us as couldn't wait half an hour at night for a bottle to be ready
