Can anyone help?

My son who getting towards 9 months, doesn’t seem to want his milks anymore, he’s has 3 homemade nutritional meals a day, but over the course of thIs last week, he doesn’t seem to want his milk, I reduced his bottles from 3 to just 2 a day - morning & night but it now seems he doesn’t want these either, this morning he’s woken up so I’ve made his bottle as usual but he only drank about 3oz but that took a lot of effort, he kept taking a bit then spitting it out, turning his head away, biting the teat and singing to the bottle. any advise?

My daughter stopped around the same age although it seemed to be due to a lactose issue brought on by antibiotics. I tried her with warmed up alternatives but she was having none of it. We use alternative dairy in her porridge so she gets the calcium required.
We just fed her well and gave her water. Offered her milk every now and then, but that was it. She hasn't had a bottle before bed since she was 9mo.
She's a happy little thing though!

Quite a few babies seem to go off milk at this age. If he is a good eater just include lots of dairy products in his meals and give a multivitamin. Grated cheese is a great finger food.

Are you offering milk at least 30 mins before food?

Sianyc24 · 08/08/2020 08:49

I’m glad I’m not the only one! He has cows milk with his porridge or weetabix, do you use blue top or green?
Did you keep offering milk at set times for a while before you stopped?
He’s been on steroids for a short term period and his appetite increased massively but now he’s off them he doesn’t seem to be interested in his milk but loves his food Smile

I’ll try introducing more products with calcium thank

Babies will wean themselves off milk in their own time. He may be just at the point of weaning off milk. Keep offering it as it may just be a phase. Maybe try a sippy cup rather than a bottle? Also, the NHS clearly says on their site to offer milk after food, not before, so dont be tempted to prioritise the milk over the food. Once he is getting a varied and healthy diet with lots of calcium foods he will be fine.

@SqidgeBum where have u read the nhs says always feed solids before milk at 9 months?

My baby is 9 months and under consultant and SALT etc and I've always been told to spread them out. So she gets a bottle on waking, breakfast 1.5hrs later and they are generally just spread out, never offered at same time.

SqidgeBum · 08/08/2020 09:30

@Sianyc24 this is a direct quote from the nhs weaning advice page, from the section entitled 'feeding your baby from around 6 months'

"Start offering them food before their usual milk feed as they might not be interested if they're full, but do not wait until your baby's too hungry."

@SqidgeBum

In the 7-9 months it also says

Feeding your baby: from 7 to 9 months
Your baby will gradually move towards eating 3 meals a day (breakfast, lunch and tea), in addition to their usual milk feeds, which may be around 4 a day (for example, on waking, after lunch, after tea and before bed).

So not all bottles are after solids.

As I say I think take the words "for example" at face value as it's just a suggestion and u do what works for u. I was definitely advised to spread them all out

Certainly feeding a bottle straight before a solid feed is a bad idea. That is what I think that site is actually saying
