Feeding my newborn expresses milk in a bottle?

Hiya,

I have a fast let-down (and) oversupply. Whichever breast I’m feeding bubz on, the other leaks so much that my breast pads gets soaked, and our clothes too at times.
So I decided to purchase this: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B079G6RWWY?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

It’s amazing as I’ve been able to collect upto 30ml (2oz) from a breast whilst breastfeeding on the other.

I’ve tried feeding this to baby with a doidy cup (as advised by midwife) but baby doesn’t take to it much and the milk is dribbling out his mouth too.
I’m getting conflicting advice from different health visitors/midwifes to not introduce bottle. But I would love to occasionally use a bottle to feed my baby with the expressed milk more easily.

Has anyone experienced adverse affects on switching between breast and bottle? My baby has a good latch and I would prefer not to use the bottle if it could confuse or disrupt his latching.

Hope someone can help.

Many thanks

I gave Dd a bottle at 2/3 days old and never had a problem with nipple confusion. She fed for 2.5 years.

In fact, every bf woman I knew that did wait to give a bottle (4-6 weeks) could never get them to take one and could leave baby for more than an hour or two.

I always suggest starting with a bottle sooner rather than later. It makes it so much easier to get a few hours to yourself!

How old is baby?

In my experience it's entirely up to baby if they will take a bottle. I introduced one at the same age with both mine. Eldest ended up being combi fed (which I hated) and youngest hated bottles and dummies 🤷🏼‍♀️

I don't think it matters when you introduce a bottle, if they don't like it they won't take it.

You can freeze what you get as run off or you can put it in baby's bath. Makes their skin lovely and soft.

Be careful with using the Haakaa at every feed though as it can make your oversupply issue worse. As annoying as it is, until your supply settles (around 6 weeks) it would be worth letting some just soak into a pad.

You can introduce a bottle. It's only in very rare cases it causes any confusion. He's not having weight/latch issues - I wouldn't give it a second thought :)

We had to give a bottle as we had a tongue tie to deal with. Look up paced bottle feeding. Never had any issues with latching caused by bottle use (or dummy use - still using a dummy now at 8 months) and has been breastfeeding from about 8 weeks with no shields.

I used to collect milk with Medela Shells on the other side, but stopped doing that when I had to reduce my oversupply issues (caused by pumping!). If you want to suppress leakage then putting pressure on the nipple works well

You can freeze breastmilk if needed. So you can wait. I mixed fed from 2 weeks old. he rejected bottles since 6 months
