Breastfeeding and drugs...

Specifically heroin My daughter is 5 weeks old and I've breastfed her successfully since birth. In the last few days I've smoked heroin twice, and fed my daughter within 3 or so hours each time. I really need some information on the effect this could have on her. I don't want to ask the health visitor or doctor for obvious reasons.

Jodie, may I ask what you are scared off? I mean, why you don't want any proffessional involvement?
There is no shame in seeking help, indeed, to me personally it shows that teh person is ready to face their problems and that they want to do something about it, which are absolute fantastic Qualities in a person, imo.
Yes the first weeks with a new Baby are stressful, but no, you should not feel the need to take drugs to get through those. If you do feel the need, then you do need help...honestly there is nothing wrong with needing help and admitting a short coming.

Jodie, with respect, you do need help.

You could have found out the info you needed about breastfeeding risks anywhere online. But you came to Mumsnet. I think you realised that people were going to give you support, but that people would also be very concerned about what you were doing.

You don't have your situation under control if you are using heroin because you are feeling low with a new baby.

Please sort it out.

Lorayn - very few people are smack addicts, that's why very few new mums turn to smack...

Slightly off topic, but is it ok to freeze breast milk for storage?

yes jodie you can freeze breastmilk.

I think you may be wrong there jodie, some mothers do the best thing for their children, and stop taking it, others continue to take it and have their babies born drug addicts, but some, may I suggest a minority of addicts, stop taking it for a year, then decide it's fine to start again when their baby gets to 5 weeks old.

See where I'm coming from???

If you can stay off it that long, you can keep off it, you need to move away from your friends, or at least tell them you don't want to be around that stuff, and make sure you aren't, and do exactly what you started off doing, putting your kids first rather than a hit.

As for freezing breast milk?? what's this for?? So you can plan your feeding around your newly reformed habit, how sweet.
