You can freeze breastmilk, can't you?

berolina · 29/09/2007 17:40

PMSL franny

sparkly - freeze it for times ahead?

Congratulations again! And am impressed at the 310ml.

I have a medela harmony hand pump that it doesn't look like I'll have to use (although we're only 8 days in, but it's looking good). Would you like it on extended loan, or are you getting your own anyway?

FrannyandZooey · 29/09/2007 17:42

if you want to do something unusual with it there are a few ideas here

otherwise just freeze for another day

I am also impressed btw

sparklygothkat · 29/09/2007 17:43

I just went and brought a medela mini electric today as my boots electric one and my handpump were crap. Thanks anyway

Can you donate it ?

sparklygothkat · 29/09/2007 17:45

I have googled milk banks but there is no where near me that does it I will ask in SCBU tomorrow to see if they have a milk bank, but can't find any info on the hospital website

I will have to express some more off this evening too, so will have more

LadyVictoriaOfCake · 29/09/2007 17:49

well done!

seriously, look into milk banks, i know some places will come and collect it for you. you will need freezer space.

sparklygothkat · 29/09/2007 17:54

want to donate it if possible, seems a shame to waste it. Even if I freeze it, its unlikely to be used when he comes home as he will be breastfeeding anyway.

Freeze it, as your supply evens out you won't necessarily express as easily and you never know when you might need it. If you don't use it all you can always use it in cooking for lo when you start weaning, I used some up in porridge and baby rice when DD started solids. Don't know if it will keep that long though - the stuff I used was from when she was 4 months.

trying to work out how much to freeze, 110ml are at the hospital, 200ml in my fridge atm, and will express more later, possibly another 100ml or so. He only needs 150ml.

Sparkly, why don't you freeze around 75ml in ice-cube trays. Less waste if you do need to defrost it. Am well impressed btw!

StrawberryMartini · 29/09/2007 20:20

Ice-cube trays are a bad idea as you can't put a tight lid on the milk. Freeze small amounts in bm storage bags - will keep up to 6 months at the back of a freezer - just make sure you date it.

chatee · 29/09/2007 20:25

store it in a bottle in the fridge and add to it during a 12 hour period and then transfer to a dated bag and put it in the freezer....
handy for those christmas nights out and also when weaning

ps iirc it stores in the freezer for 12 months(just make sure it's a decent freezer that doesn't break down like mine did- i was asking neighbours to store'my liquid gold'
hth xx

moondog · 29/09/2007 20:29

sparklygothkat · 29/09/2007 20:54
