I'm so sorry about this, but yet another question...

I'm really useless sorry!! Does anyone know how long it takes to refill a boob, if that's the right phrase. I'm expressing milk to top up with cup feeds for my ds, but if I express after his feed there's a pitiful amount left. I'm currently doing 3 hour feeds so I was wondering if I express for say quarter of an hour, an hour before feeding him will this affect my next feed? Will there be nothing left for my ds? I'm not sure how all this works. I did try expressing at the same time as feeding, but I managed to cock both up, couldn't get the position right for ds and I managed to spill the small amount of milk I expressed! Dur! So as I need to top up after he's been on the breast, I was hoping it was ok to express an hour before feeding.

I have to agree with Tiktik, its normal for babies to initially lose weight, but not to gain and then start losing. There must be a reason, as others have said, perhaps he is sleepy or not removing the milk efficiently. The op needs to say why she is topping up.

If the baby won't stay awake long enough to take a full feed, then expressing, while he sleeps, will be extra stimulation for the breasts to increase supply and produce extra feeds. Just a thought. If its just to stick to a routine then obviously the better option would be just to put him back on the breast, if he is feeding well when he does feed.

Hello everyone, thanks for your replies, sorry if I've started a bit of a debate.... I've been off feeding and expressing like a deranged woman today!!

Basically I'm not working on a routine, the three hour feeding thing was a guideline for the maximum time I should go... I'm actually feeding every 90 mins for about an hour to an hour and a half (so basically all the time!!)

Hi Kinki my experience is pretty similar to yours and Jojays... ds is pretty sleepy during feeds, i'm starting to realise I need to do much more to keep him awake, but I also think I'm having problems with latching on. I don't think he's feeding terribly efficiently, sometimes I can't hear any swallowing for ages despite him sucking away. I've decided I really need to see a breast feeding advisor so she can watch me do a feed and make sure I'm doing it right. The only time I've been shown was in recovery half an hour after my cs, and I was lying flat, so I'm sure I'm getting it wrong. I guess I was wrong to assume that because it didn't hurt I had a good latch.

Having struggled with cup feeding, I found a fantastic thingy in the chemist today, it's a medela soft cup feeder. Basically it's a large syringe type tube, but it's got a really soft flexible cup like thing at the bottom and the baby can lap at the milk much more easily than a rigid cup. Anyway, I tried it this afternoon and he gulped down 50ml (after having been at the breast for about an hour) so I think instinctively I feel topping up with ebm is the best way to go, at least until he's got some more energy, and I've seen the breast feeding advisor to double check I'm getting the latch right.

Thanks so much for your help everyone, it means a lot to me. I was so smug last week when I had so much milk it was pouring out of me, now my production has slowed so much I think I've started a period. I thought I'd find feeding so much easier and your support is much appreciated

And i need to apologise to TikTok - was really too stressed to be posting last night and i didn't come across well(excruciating SPD and a DH who still don't get it after 5 pregnancies) - normally i'd have quoted the other posts so that people knew why I was saying what i did.
