When a baby falls asleep on breast at the end of feed do you then wind them or do you leave them? Stupid question but cant remeber what i did with ds1 (think i just let him sleep).

I leave them.

think i just sort of gently rubbed back whilst cuddling - unless it was night, then straight back into cot, as apparently they are so relaxed they don't take down any air

Jojay · 27/09/2007 13:34

I used to wind ds as if I didn't he'd wake up 10 mins later thrashing around until he'd had a burp.

I wouldn't bother if you can get away with it though.

Jojay · 27/09/2007 13:35

I used to do it in a cuddly way though , ds over my shoulder and I'd pat his back, rather than sitting upright on my knee.

EdieMcredie · 27/09/2007 13:36

Im paranoid about her projectile vomiting so I do it day and night but I probably don't need to!

JodieG1 · 27/09/2007 13:39

In my cicrumstances I keep baby asleep on me during the day after a feed so wouldn't bother winding and at night I co-sleep so just feed lying down.

MamaMaiasaura · 27/09/2007 13:41

OK that all makes sense. With ds1 pretty sure if night feed i left him (he wasnt windy) but if he wasawake at end i winded him. NOt idea what this one will be like as not even arrived yet but just thinking of all the questions i never got answered with ds1.

I do remember in hopstial with ds1 whne the midwife asked if i had winded ds1 and i said 'no because i am breastfeeding', to which the nurse said I still needed to wind. I had no idea

Depends, sometimes I have a gut feeling there's a burp so I wind him, sometimes I chance it. If I get it wrong he wakes up either spewing or trying to get the burp up so I tend to gently wind him on my shoulder in the day or just sitting at night (he still tries to sleep through this for some reason, sleeps much deeper when upright !)

ChubbyScotsBurd · 27/09/2007 13:44

In hospital with DS (he's my 1st) I asked MW if I should be winding him (as BF) - she just shrugged! It's all lies about BF babies not needing winded, now I know that from experience!

Miaou · 27/09/2007 13:47

Like chubby says, sometimes you get a sense they need to burp, in which case I gently put ds2 over my shoulder and instead of patting him I apply firm pressure to the base of his back and stroke/rub upwards. That way I don't wake him but it gets the wind up. Generally speaking though I don't need to wind at night now (9 weeks), but I did to start with at every feed, asleep or not.

At hospital they showed me how to burp DD2 asleep by sitting her up and supporting her chin as well as the back of her head. It seems to work.

Is is right that if you don't wind them and they have some wind stuck down there they'll spew? I was worried my ds was ill as he kept being sick after bf, but he's hungry and thriving so I thought that perhaps it was wind forcing the milk back up....
