Colic and reflux

Does anyone have any (magical) tips/advice for a baby with colic and reflux?

Baby is 5 weeks old at the moment. I've been around some experienced mums the last couple of days and they are convinced he has both. I'm going to call the HV tomorrow but thought I'd check with you other experts too.

Background, he's been fussy/crying for a good 7 hours every evening/night for over 2 weeks now and throws up multiple times between feeds. And the last few days he maybe has about half an hour when he's not crying or sleeping. I'm at the end of my tether and feel like I'm missing out on all the good bits of the newborn phase.

He's EBF, I've been burping him during and after, keeping him upright during and after a feed and he's been having infacol. I've tried baby massage but he doesn't like it so cries a lot, taking in more air so it's counter productive.

That definitely colic.

He may have allergies or he may just have colic. I would try you going dairy and soya free for 6 weeks to see if there is an improvement.

I know how frustrating it can be to have a fussy baby. When you asked if there was a magical solution, I had to share. YES there is. It's called Happi Tummi. It's a natural belly wrap that calms a crying baby instantly. It was created by a mom who had a colicky baby and they now have a full line of product from infants to the elderly. You can order one here: happitummi.com/?ref=Mq2r9cEV-CBE Hope you find it to be your magical solution also!

Get professional opinion! Unfortunately colic / reflux is an absolute nightmare. I was told my second had this. Had to mix up and feed baby gaviscon via a syringe before every feed which was total nightmare to go anywhere especially as was breastfeeding. I honestly think that despite all the remedies I tried it made no difference whatsoever and we just muddled through until she outgrew it. It’s a frustrating annoying irritating time trust me I really do know. But in the end bang will grow out of it. Just try to keep calm ( difficult for sure!). As an aside, I knew someone who baby had to get special formula made with COOLED water cos he had some tummy thing...🤔

@Fluffytail1 we were prescribed some baby gaviscon yesterday which has stopped him throwing up at least. I'm hoping I'll see some more changes in a few days. It's just all about powering through at the moment.

Yes it’s really tough on mums when they are primary Carer and baby is a bit sickly/ grizzly all the time. And you can’t seem to placate or help them! You can also try lying baby on his tummy over your lap and rubbbing his back. And lying on his tummy and pushing his legs up gently like a sort of pumping motion. Or avengers same with arms lying on tummy and raising arms above head and back down again. I tried all of these things. May or may not work but sometime if you know you’ve tried you know it’s not you! Good luck 😉

Have you considered dairy allergy? Are you breastfeeding?

Wingingthis · 06/07/2020 13:19

Sorry just saw you are! Try cutting out dairy and see if there is any improvement

@edin16 OP I could have written your post. When did things get better for you? My DS2 is 6 weeks. DS1 outgrew his reflux by 3-4 months but DS2 seems worse and also seems to have colic too. Desperately looking for some reassurance x

edin16 · 10/04/2021 07:47

@Mommaplaysthebanjo I'd like to give you that reassurance but we're still dealing with it at 10 months old.
He has omeprazole now and then a bit of gaviscon before bed. Weaning didn't help and he now just throws up food too. There doesn't seem to be specific trigger foods or intolerances.
He's had treatment with an osteopath which helped a little but it's still hard.

@edin16 so sorry to hear that things haven’t resolved. I have a horrid feeling that we’re going to be in this position too this time. Does the medication keep you DS happy and pain free at least?

edin16 · 10/04/2021 09:11

Most of the time, yes. I've tried taking him off it a couple of times but it gets bad again so for now we'll stick to what we're doing.
