DD won't drink - when to get worried?

Not sure if I'm putting this in the right topic, but here goes.

DD (9mths, silent reflux, dairy and gluten-intolerant) was mega sick on Monday. She's never really been sick before, but started gagging when I gave her solids at lunchtime, and then heaved lunch and breakfast all over the place. She's had no temp at all, and since she's been getting more refluxy recently I've put it down to that. She hasn't had any unusual foods.

Since then, she's been in pain when burping (I assume heart burn), but it's improving. But she won't drink! She's BF morning and evening but takes very little from me. The past few days we've been lucky to get 3 or 4 oz of fluid (water or formula) down her. We've tried her usual cup, bottles and off a spoon.

I'm being rational and assuming she'll get over it, but I am concerned about her hydration. Is this a GP-level of concern or a wait-it-out kind of concern?

constipation is usually a good indication that they need more fluids. How are her nappies so far?

fransmom · 26/09/2007 19:54

no. it's def a gp kind of concern sweetheart. dd had reflux and silent reflux.
(sr is where abby is sick and then swallows it, leaving a continual sour smell in her mouth).

go to gp.don't believe them if they say they will grow out of it. how would the doc feel if they were continually being sick. would they leave it or seek treatment? i know what they would choose. why should a baby have to suffer cos it can't tell the doc how crap s/he is feeling?

get a referral to paediatrician in specialist children's hospital; if doc won't give you referral, go see other docs until you do get one. keep saying about "how would you (the doc, not you) feel if you were being sick and then swallowing it"? that seems to be the one statement that got through to them.

i had to take on three docs before i gpot the referral. please keep going for your baby's sake,

Fransmom, we've actually had a referral and been on ranitidine since 4mo, due to go back this Monday in fact. Just wondering if I should wait it out till Mon, or phone GP tomorrow? Just not sure when a sunken fontanelle is serious or not?

phone gp or can you get him to out of hours clinic? sunken fontanelles can be dodgy but not sure why. hold ona sec

fransmom · 26/09/2007 20:16

have asked for help from lulu, our resident doula. hopefully she miay be able to help you bertter than i can

Sunken fontanelles are a sign of very extreme dehydration. Ds (also reflux) had pretty serious dehydration but his fontanelle was OK. The signs he had were:

very dry mouth (his tongue felt almost like a cat's tongue iykwim)

no pooing (but that may not be so relevant at this age, ds was newborn)

yellowish tone to his skin

fransmom · 27/09/2007 13:10

get him to gp/hospital ASAP

Thanks for your concern. Luckily today she decided that drinking is ok and took 6oz formula (as much as she'll ever take) and several healthy gulps of water too. Hope this sorts out her stinky breath!

I came down with a temperature and went off food and drink today, so I presume that's what her problem was (tho' she didn't have the temp). Still, all very concerning at the time! Will discuss this with consultant on Monday.

how were things today? (((((((((((((()))))))))))))))

hobnob57 · 02/10/2007 20:06

She's back to normal (ie. drinking her bare minimum, but at least it's better than nothing!). Saw the consultant yesterday and she said she didn't look dehydrated (didn't check her fontanelle though), and to keep plying her with stuff all day long. Gets very wearing. I thought it might improve with age, but apparently not. It's one of the reasons I'm petrified of giving up breast feeding, in case she really doesn't up her intake from her 4-6oz during the day. However, since I'm dairy and gluten-free, and she is 1 in December, I am pretty well decided that I'm going to enjoy lots of cream and chocolate at Christmas, so we'll have to see....

Thanks for asking!

PS Consultant said to hold off weaning her off the ranitidine for now. Review in Jan.
