I read last night that now my daughter is 2 she should be switched to semiskimmed milk and low fat yougurts as from now on her fat intake should be watched slightly. I was quite suprised I must be honest. Anyone have any pealrs of wisdom for me please.

I think it's full fat until 5...

harleyd · 25/09/2007 11:30

apparently they dont need the fat content, and the calcium content is the same in ss as in whole milk.
i have never changed mine over to ss though

nailpolish · 25/09/2007 11:30

i am very surprised at that
my dds are 5 and 3 and i still give them full fat
they are growing children fgs!

Meeely2 · 25/09/2007 11:30

still on full fat here too - nearly 3 yo

Piffle · 25/09/2007 11:31

calcium needs fat to be absorbed for kids no brainer to give ss

McDreamy · 25/09/2007 11:32

You can put children onto semi skimmed from 2 years old as their diet contains enough fat and the calcium content is the same as ful fat.

Both my children are now on ss (aged 4 and 2) but I continue to give them full fat everything else, ie. yoghurts cheese cream etc.

madame · 25/09/2007 11:33

I thought it was a little strange but it was in
the book, entitled 'What to expect for the first 3 years' which I have found very good in the past. Does anyone know where to maybe goonline to see what the gov nutrition guidelines may be

OP posts:
nailpolish · 25/09/2007 11:33

surely that depends on the diet, mcdreamy?

McDreamy · 25/09/2007 11:35

here

madame · 25/09/2007 11:35

She has a good diet but isn't a big fan on yogurts and only eats small amounts of cheese so I guess it's a good idea to keep her on full fat for a while. I don't want to end up giving her rubbish to get her dairy intake in

OP posts:
Piffle · 25/09/2007 11:36

exactly it says you can start not you should start

harleyd · 25/09/2007 11:36

i have no intentions of changing from full fat

McDreamy · 25/09/2007 11:37

I'm guessing it's based on the average diet for the average child in average Britain......I suppose that's how they come up with most guidelines?

madame · 25/09/2007 11:37

Thank you McDreamy

nailpolish · 25/09/2007 11:39

i suppose. thanks mcdreamy
i like the idea of children drinking full fat milk
it seems better

startouchedtrinity · 25/09/2007 11:45

madame, I had the 'what to expect' book and I remember being very put off by some of its advice about diet. My dds both have full-fat everything at 5 and 3 and I have no intention of changing. Providing your dd is active and has plenty of fruit and veg she will be fine. I get really annoyed at the govt coming down hard on healthy food that happens to be high in fat whilst not coming down so hard on processed rubbish.

bluejelly · 25/09/2007 11:49

there is v little difference between f fat and semi skimmed anyway, I think 3% and 5%

Piggy · 25/09/2007 11:50

I have no plans to wean my 2 (2.11 and 1.11) off full fat milk. I've never understood why milk gets such a bad press. The problem for a lot of overweight children isn't the full fat milk they drink (which is only 3.5 - 4% fat) but the other crap and processed foods they eat. IMVHO.

FCH · 25/09/2007 11:52

I'm 30 - I still have full fat everything

madame · 25/09/2007 11:53

Good point Piggy

TheMadHouse · 25/09/2007 11:54

Full fat. I have a 2.6 and a 15 month old. Both get full fat.

Bith also get unpaturised straight from the cow when at inlaws as FIL is a dairy farmer. Lovley

Piggy · 25/09/2007 11:55

Go for it FCH! I'm convinced that one day we'll find out that all the rubbish they put into low-cal/low-fat foods is doing us serious harm.

Dh and I drink skimmed milk because we like it (very watery) but I wouldn't touch low calorie marg or anything like that.

McDreamy · 25/09/2007 11:56

I think you are all making really good points about sticking with the full fat and as Piffle says it only says you can not you should. Equally I don't think I am decreasing the quality of my children's diet by giving them semi skimmed. I think with a child who has a well balanced diet either is appropriate.

islandofsodor · 25/09/2007 11:59

We put ours on semi skimmed at 2 but that was only becasue it madelife easier if they drank the same milk as us.

They have full fat yoghurt etc. There is no reason they HAVE to be switched, besides full fat milk is still only 5%or somehting like that fat anyway which compared to a pack of crips is negligable.

nailpolish · 25/09/2007 12:03

madhouse - unpasteurised is yummmy! MMMMM
