if your baby self weaned off BF - at what age?

DS is 7mo and he doesn't actively search out a BF anymore. He only feeds when sleepy and sometimes doesn't seem that fussed. Is this an ok age for him to be self-weaning? (I've been considering swapping to FF anyway, so am wondering if he's telling me he's ready too). He prefers to drink out of a cup now, like he enjoys being grown-up.

My baby still bf after he started school at 4. He self weaned around 5.

At 7 mos milk is still an important part of the diet. If he weans from the breast he will need FF till at least 12 mos. Why pay for inferior milk and have to prepare bottles etc when you can get the best for nothing with no washing up (and in more attractive packaging?) Rhetorical question, let's not have that argument again.

perfectly explained elastic!

My dd self weaned at 7 months - exactly like your ds by the sound of it. She gradually started wanting BF less and less and eventually refused all together. She now drinks FF out of a cup and is perfectly happy! Don't think there is a right or wrong answer to this, as each child is different. But you do need to make sure that he drinks sufficient FF as this is still the most important part of his diet at this age

Could it possibly be the start of a nursing strike as it would be unusual to self wean that early...

choolie · 23/09/2007 17:54

No, not a nursing strike, he's not been interested in BF since around month 4, will only feed when about to nap, or during nap (i have tried alternate positions, rooms etc.) but is really interested in drinking from a cup.

Whilst I know some people do continue for long past the 6 month mark, I think I'm prob hanging on for me more than him and that he's actually quite happy to make the transition to cup drinking (won't take a bottle or sippy cup either!)

You do have the option of expressing your own milk to give him, which some people find easier with a pump than by hand. You can give that, or formula by cup if you like.
