Lazy latcher?

I think I've made my nearly five week old baby lazy at latching as I've let him constantly use my boob for comfort and not been bothering to change his position if he's about to fall asleep (for fear he won't sleep - desperate for him to go to sleep!) So he ends up rolling nipple round/sucking on it for ages and ages after a feed. He often won't open mouth really wide for a feed now - even though I tease his lower lip. Any suggestions? I'm making my nipples sore and am fed up.

dinny just keep putting him on and taking him off until he is on properly. you'll just have to keep persevering with it I'm afraid.
It is worth keeping on at so that he gets into the habit of latching on properly - no sore boobs then.

dinny, my wee fella was a lazy latcher as well (still is when he's tired). The BF counsellor showed me how to get most of the boob in. Tickle his top lip (or nose) with the nipple. When his mouth opens wide roll your areola in from the bottom first. i.e the bottom of your areola rolls in from his top lip down so that your nipple rolls along the roof of his mouth. She told me not to worry too much if the top half of the areola isn't all in his mouth. It was bloody hard work repeatedly attempting this but he has caught on. Don't try when he's howling, it just makes things worse.

good luck - I'm looking forward to longer stretches between feeds with my 4wk old too! (every 2-3 hours at the mo')
