I need some advice desperately!! My baby son is 9lbs 3 oz, 8 weeks old and is having problems feeding. He only takes 2 oz at every feed, then screams/bucks like a bronco/ has started to refuse his bottle. After winding for AGES he'll sometimes take down another 2 oz, but these feeds take ages. He's been doing this for weeks now, he has been gaining weight steadily, but feeds seem to be getting worse, not better, and hes taking less per feed, not more. I feed him every 3 and a half to 4 hours, and he sleeps for 4.5 - 6 hours at a stretch at night. He doesnt ever really scream for a feed. The paed diagnosed reflux at 4 weeks, and he's on Losec (he's not projectile vomiting). Is my son eating enough? Am i worrying uneccessarily if he's weeing and pooing, and slowly gaining weight? I'm getting him weighed again on wednesday - should i just calm down about counting every single ml he drinks and writing it down?? This is my first time, and i'm anxious about EVERYTHING!!!!

Its always hard with your first child, and feeding them feeding them is tied up with how we feel we are doing as parents, hence so much worry about it iyswim
I think it does sound like the digestion problems are not helping, but he could just be an anxious baby. Who needs lots of cuddles etc
Don't worry it will be much easier when he us past 3 months and less colicky

have you tried a faster teat? Maybe he gets upset at the slow flow and thats why he gets in a strop.

High welshthang don't worry! I tend to agree with seona that you probably need faster flow teats, the bucking sounds like impatience!! Just go up one hole at first though, especially if he has reflux, as he might throw up if its given too quickly. If he is gaining weight, getting lots of wet and dirty nappies and is sleeping well he is probably getting what he needs anyway.

Thanks everybody for your advice - my little lad is already on medium flow teats -should i go up one more to fast flow? I should also say that he goes as stiff as a board and cries inconsolably for a bit, then eventually decides to take a bit more, whilst coughing and spluttering. Is this his reflux, do you think?? Are his meds not working?? He's also been diagnosed as having larygal malacia - a wobbly larynx - which makes his breathing very noisy at times. Does anyonw else have any experience of this condition with their little ones?

Actually scrap that, maybe the flow is too fast and he chokes when drinking so coughs and splutters and gets put off feeding. Try slower ones first.

coughing and spluttering not anything to do with reflux usually unless he is drinking too quickly but usually reflux only affects them once their stomach is full due to the hiatus not closing properly.
