Cow and gate stage 1 formula

Hi, sorry for the long post! I’m currently using cow and gate stage 1 for my little boy, he’s 4 and a half months old, no matter how I make the bottles up it never seems to dissolve all the powder, and there are always lots of frothy bubbles too! I’ve mentioned it to my heath visitor and she said it’s nothing to worry about as he’s still taking the feed but just wanted to know if anyone else has had this problem? Also (sorry if it’s tmi) when he poo’s it looks like there are little bits in there too, almost the same as the undosolved powder, again I mentioned it to the heath visitor who told me not to worry as it’s normal for baby to poo like this? My other 2 never had this issue but they had SMA gold. I don’t know if i should just try the ready made cow and gate stage 1 or change his milk altogether? I don’t want to upset his little tummy though! Any help would be great! Thank you 💛

How do you make the bottles? We have a prep machine and have to use the lid that comes with it and give it a really good shake for about 15 seconds. I've found that it has loads of bubbles too but she seems to be fine with that so wouldn't worry. As long as he's taking his feeds and is ok on it then I imagine it shouldn't be a problem.

Thank you for such a quick reply, I don't have a perfect prep so I use the kettle, I follow the instructions on the tub of milk and i've also tried to make it up without leaving the water to cool for half an hour too! And we also give it a good shake! Then I find the more we shake the frothier it gets 🤦🏼‍♀️ once he's finished the milk there's still froth in the bottle and when I open the lid to wash it I can see little undisolved bits too! He's not upset when feeding but can be a bit fidjity at times, but like you said he's taking the feed and is happy enough so just see how he goes and if it's the same the next time I see my hv I'll mention it again. xx

Yeah I found hotter water rather than leaving it to cool helped when we used the kettle before. Ours is the same with froth! I sometimes have to take the bottle from her because I can't tell how much is left, we end up with an ounce of froth when the milk has gone but she seems ok, I haven't yet found a way around it🤦‍♀️xx

It's the same with my little one, it looks like he's got milk left but it's all frothy bubbles! It's confusing as to how much milk they're really having isn't it! xx

Try adding a drop of infacol into the milk. It will dissolve all the froth and bubbles and leave a smooth milk

dochas06 · 09/05/2020 19:41

We have the same problem with cow and gate. Just couldn’t get it to dissolve and it was so frothy no matter how we made it up.
also seemed to make her reflux pain much worse so we went back to pre made. I’m aware that when she is regularly taking larger feed amounts that we will need to move back to powder.
Also, it’s normal for their poops to have white bits in it.

Lea4 · 10/05/2020 16:16

@TiptopJ Thank you, he did have infacol when he was younger but It didn't seem to make much difference to the milk? 🤷🏼‍♀️ xx

@dochas06 I'm thinking of trying the ready made, the powder just seems so frothy!! And my older 2 never had the white bits in their poo but glad to know it's normal, thank you xx

Have you tried Hipp Organic? It was the formula we came across with. We tried a few as our DD was very particular! The milk came out all smooth and with a nice sweet smell. It's the one that she tolerated the best :)

Lea4 · 11/05/2020 13:01

@MrsLully I've not tried that no. My older 2 both had sma gold, I started my younger son cow and gate stage 1 but he got constipated so we swapped to cow and gate comfort, that made his poo really runny so went back to normal cow and gate, all these changes were made after discussions with the health visitor and doctor, but his poo is still quite loose after being back to normal milk for over 3 months 🤷🏼‍♀️ he's got his injections on Thursday so I'll speak to the health visitor and doctor then and see what they suggest. ☺️ xx

Just thought I would post to say that we have just switched to mam anti colic bottles and the powder dissolves really well with almost no froth! We used Tommee tippee closer to nature bottles before.

Lea4 · 22/05/2020 17:48

@dochas06 I've done the opposite, I was using the Mam bottles and switched to tommee tippee, seems to be less frothy but still not fully dissolving 🤷🏼‍♀️ xx

😂 oh well, I don’t know then! Maybe I’ve just suddenly become better at making up bottles!

Lea4 · 25/05/2020 00:38

@dochas06 haha, maybe you have 🍼 lol xx

We use a perfect prep and had the same issue with the updated formula. I have started stirring it after the hot shot is added and it seems to dissolve the majority of it. Instead of shaking it I swirl it once the bottle is made and it gets rid of the extra that did not dissolve

Lea4 · 29/05/2020 11:13

@Lauz1234 we haven't got a prep machine, I have started swirling it rather than shaking it but I'll def try stirring it! Thank you! 💛

@Lauz1234 just wanted to say THANK YOU! The stirring has really made a difference!!! No more frothy bubbles 🙌🏻 xx

I second this! I was using infacol because my LO was lazy bringing up her wind but she’s fine now so I stopped using it and since I stopped using the infacol, her bottles are very frothy and always left with an ounce of bubbles so think I’ll continue using a little drop of infacol in her bottles
