Powdered formula

Looking for opinions on powdered formula.
We use cow and gate premade, tried switching to powdered cow and gate, it cause awful reflux pains in our 10 week old. No matter what we did, we could never get it all dissolved and for a 5oz bottle we ended up with almost 2oz of froth.
What do you use? Does it dissolve well? What does it smell and taste like?

Some things to try are adding Demtinox to the bottle, both of my DN had this and it really helped.

Have you tried swapping brands too?

Are you making the bottle up yourself or using a perfect prep?

Hope06 · 24/04/2020 15:39

@JiltedJohnsJulie
That’s why I’m asking for peoples opinions on the formula they use, so that hopefully I don’t end up buying tubs of powder, just to throw it out when it does the same thing.
I have tried multiple methods of making it up including using a perfect prep. It doesn’t seem to make a difference which way I do it.

I use cow and gate and never had a problem with the powder not dissolving. If you shake it alot you will get froth but leave it on the side for 5 mins and it goes away. Also if you put the powder in first the give it a shake with a little bit of water it will all dissolve then top up to the required amount.

Are you putting powder then water, or water then powder? Found the first way used to create a paste and trap half the powder

Hope06 · 24/04/2020 15:56

@LutherRalph1 water then powder
I seem to get lots of tiny bits stuck all over the inside of the bottle

My daughter has Kendamil which smells and tastes much nicer than other formulas I’ve used. And it mixes very well.

Hipp Organic.
Was originally on Aptamil. Terribly frothy, tremendous colic.
Switched to Hipp which has texture like EBM and seems to dissolve easier

Willow4987 · 29/04/2020 02:09

I found cow and gate didn’t mix well as you describe and made my son gassy

Hipp has been so much better. Mixes nicer, looks nice and no gas issues

MyFartWillGoOn · 29/04/2020 02:57

We're also on HIPP anti reflux and find it's great but we always put in powder then formula and never have any bits

Dingdongthewitchisbread · 29/04/2020 03:13

Hipp organic here as well. We used Aptamil originally until they changed the formula and then found Hipp. It’s a much nicer consistency, doesn’t go clumpy at all and is actually cheaper. They just don’t have the fancy tubs.

dochas06 · 29/04/2020 03:22

Guys that are using HiPP organic, do you still recommend it now that the formula has changed? I’ve read that since the change, it smells and tastes very fishy?

Giganticshark · 29/04/2020 04:09

We found aldi milk dissolved easier than aptamil, it is also far cheaper. Basically the same stuff

justsotiredallthetime · 29/04/2020 04:17

Are you using C&G anti reflux milk? If so, then yes if you put the powder in first then it doesn't dissolve properly. I have no idea why but we ended doing the water first then putting the powder in. I know it's not the 'proper' method but it's the only way it stops the clumping. My baby is now 15 months and was absolutely fine with this method. I used a perfect prep too as it's just easier having the water already at the correct temperature. And yes, it does froth :)

Willow4987 · 29/04/2020 04:34

@dochas06 I’ve not used a new tub yet but have heard the same. Really hoping it’s not too bad

Twiglet2353 · 29/04/2020 05:10

@Willow4987 @dochas06 I'm about 36 hours into the new tub and baby has been no different with it (although it worse saying that my baby is an incredibly fussy eater and overcoming bottle aversion, so it's not like he downed 8oz like other kids his age). The smell isn't obvious - I had to put my head in the bag to sniff it haha. It definitely doesn't smell sweet anymore though.

Willow4987 · 29/04/2020 05:13

@Twiglet2353 oh that’s such a shame about the smell! Hope it’s still as good as before as I definitely found it to be the best for us

Twiglet2353 · 29/04/2020 05:15

My post should say worth not worse!

Mammyloveswine · 29/04/2020 06:17

I thought the advice was always to fill the bottle first and then add the scoops of formula? As you need to measure out the water?

Op I breastfed but my first had cow & gate when I was hospitalised, it really disagreed with him! I switched to aptimal and it was fine.

DS2 had Aldi formula from 6 months and never had issue!

dochas06 · 29/04/2020 07:20

Unfortunately we don’t have an Aldi anywhere near us, so we have to use branded milk.
My health visitor also advised against lots of changes of formula as it can upset their tummy’s more. Though another health visitor disagreed with that.
We use normal cow and gate and she gets a sachet if gaviscon with her first morning bottle. It seems to sort the reflux out without constipating her, though we are still using premade cow and gate, I’m almost scared to try powder again as her relux/wind was so bad, she was in tears trying to feed her

justsotiredallthetime · 29/04/2020 23:54

I'm surprised the health visitor hasn't told you to change to Cow and Gate Anti Reflux milk. It really helps!

dochas06 · 30/04/2020 04:35

Health visitor advised carobel however infant gaviscon shouldn’t be used alongside other thickening agents.

justsotiredallthetime · 30/04/2020 05:42

To be honest HV are pretty useless in my experience. Definitely try the anti reflux formula, it was the doctor who suggested it along with using the gaviscon. We used to use the pre-made milk and we had to stop and move to that.
