Toddler camping

Hello peeps.

I'm an avid camper (or at least used to be pre baby lol) and I'm embarking on camping once again. (Post lockdown)

My 14 month old currently has cows milk twice a day, morning and evening. We won't have a fridge when camping... so what do I replace it with??

My first thought was formula because I can boil water but I thought I would see what others do.

Thanks.

Use a cool box or UHT milk.

isittheholidaysyet · 15/04/2020 19:33

Formula would work.
Also UHT if you find the smallest packs you can?

Why not take a small cool bag or cool box and some ice packs if you are going to a proper site? They you can keep anything you want cool.
If you are wild camping then keep milk in a bucket of cold stream water, or place milk in a stream so the cold water is constantly flowing round it?

Cool box, little cartons of uht or just go without. The kid won't care as they won't be in the same routine as home anyway.

Cool box with ice packs and buy every day or so. Or premade formula.

Unfortunately my kids cared. Had to be normal milk (not uht) had to be warmed to exactly the same temperature as the microwave at home did it. And still insisted on drinking it in bed, despite the many accidents it caused to bedding.
They have got better over the years, but are still bloody awkward!

When the DC were little, we camped at sites with shops and bought fresh milk when we needed it. Or cartons of UHT or ready made formula?

MrsP2015 · 15/04/2020 19:51

Get the little ready made formula bottles (about 70p each in asda).
They hold 7oz so just decrease anything over that they currently drink to the 7oz.
No need to mess about with water/ powder/ warming etc. Just drink!

Best thing I took on holiday for mine (no fridge in room) I just slowly the month before we went, adjusted the temperature from warm milk to room temperature so having that on holiday wasn't a shock.

Cool bag and then:
1 pt fresh milk
1 small bottle frozen milk (McDonald's bottles are
Perfect and can be refilled!)
1 pt frozen milk x 2 depending on amount needed / if there's any local shops

The frozen milk generally takes a couple of days to defrost right at the bottom of a decent cool bag.

Ready made formula in small bottles - used these for travelling all the time, really handy.

Equimum · 15/04/2020 22:34

Are you planning on using sites where you can freeze ice blocks? We always took a cool box and rotated ice blocks. Milk keeps okay in that.

Thanks so much everyone. Lots of great ideas. I think I will take a bit of everything. As in, I will take some formula as a precaution, get some ready made bottles and use fresh milk when we have it. Thanks so much all ❤️ xx

Formula definitely!

midnightstar66 · 16/04/2020 07:36

You can get refrigerated cool boxes or campsites with hook up or even more remote sites could have a small campers kitchen with some fridge space. Loads of options really
