Unsettled and sickness only at night

Just looking for some help if anyone has been in a similar situation - thank you in advance!

I have a newborn, 2 weeks old only yesterday. She feeds, burps, sleeps well throughout the day. Very content. Never unsettled.

The past week she has been slightly unsettled at night. Crying, and then wants another feed, but then tends to bring back up the whole feed at some point before putting her down.

When she goes down for the night she is a good sleeper and will wake for her feeds which she takes no bother, no sickness, burps well and right back down to sleep (making my night times really easy!!).

It's just this random unsettled / sickness that I can't seem to work out and crack right before bed time. Usually happens around 10-11pm every night. Seems to be part of her schedule! Is this quite normal? Does she maybe have trapped wind?

Thank you again if anyone is reading and able to provide any sort of suggestions for us xx

All I can say is that small babies barf ridiculous amounts! Some babies are just sicky and if she’s not unsettled or particularly bothered I’d be prepared with a few muslins and let her get on with it. Might be a bit of reflux? If so, wind her for a bit longer - keep her upright for 20 mins after that particular feed. Is she BF or formula?

@BadgertheBodger yeah true! She's just only barfing at nights. Well I mean mega barf as in everywhere right before bed. Occasional in the day she has tiny milky spews but nothing to write home about.

She's just unsettled when we first bring her up to bed, that's when the sickness happens usually. Apart from that she doesn't make much of a peep throughout the day. I think it could be reflux from what I'm reading up on.

She is BF but expressed and in bottles. I'm just struggling a bit with advice as she is my first baby, and with the virus we have only had 2 short 5 minutes midwife visits and at that I feel we didn't get enough help or advice about the stuff I had questions on.

Maybe have a look at Cows Milk Protein Allergy, as that can cause reflux and the symptoms you describe

DS had terrible reflux and the advice I was given is that it takes much longer to wind them properly than you think, so keep going with patting, rubbing etc for at least 5 mins. Definitely try keeping her upright for longer as well and see if that helps Smile

I think you’d know if it was CMPA as she would be a lot more unhappy and it would be a lot of sick every feed. DS is lactose intolerant and he was a very very unhappy baby who hardly settled

I wasn't prepared for how crap newborns digestive systems are. They can be really crap, mine was always gassy and fussy at night as a newborn and even though I tried lots of things it only really improved with age. Evening fussiness can also be a thing. Most grow out of it.

If it was every feed I'd encourage you to try get a prescription for reflux meds as they were miracle drugs in our house. Since it's just one feed a day I'd say it might just be a fussy time you have to weather, like the others have said, do lots of winding and keep upright for a good long time after that feed.

Thanks for all your responses!

Yes definitely is only at the night time part. I think she's just unsettled at that sort of tome of night between 9-11pm. So I'll continue to weather that part of the storm as it's really not much considering how good she is the rest of the time.

She slept well throughout the night and took 2 feeds, each time burped well, and went back down easily after falling asleep without any sickness
