don't agree with my maternity nurse - what do you think?

My maternity nurse insists on waking my DD for a 10pm feed. DD is 3.5 weeks old. Her early evening feed is at 6.30-7pm.

When I am on my own, I leave DD until she wakes, which is normally about 11pm, and then feed her and then she wakes again once during the night (say 3pm-4pm). Both times she wakes, she is hungry and feeds well.

Whereas my maternity nurse likes to wake her at 10pm, and she is not as hungry so the time is spent poking and prodding her to stay awake, and then she will wake for 2 more feeds - say 2pm, and 6am.

I do not see the benefit in waking her at 10pm for a feed - but of course I could be completely wrong

grateful for any comments .... thanks!!

BOM a maternity nurse is a nanny you hire for a newborn for the first few weeks of its life. They work 24/6, typically, so they have to live-in. The general idea is to help get the baby into a routine. Personally, I think the money is better spent on a cleaner, mother's help and Ocado deliveries, which is why I was a crap maternity nurse

BandofMothers · 11/09/2007 19:40

Oh Thanks WT. Hmm, I too would rather pay a cleaner to clean up after my tired, newborn baby ass

Wisteria · 11/09/2007 19:46

God, so you actually PAY for yet another body in the house!! Wow! When I had mine I just wanted everyone to bugger off (sometimes even including dh !!)and leave me to it!

Not slagging it off tho', each to their own and I'm sure they're very useful sometimes.

hi, all i can say is dont worry too much about offending your maternity nurse, by the looks of it she is offending your sleepy newborn by prodding her in her sleep!

PollyParanoia · 11/09/2007 20:04

My friend and her maternity nurse got into a fight because the latter wanted to give four-hourly (bottle) feeds instead of three hourly ones to her one-week-old! My friend was crying as she told me this as we sat huddled in the bathroom because the maternity nurse had the run of the house and the baby. Mat nurse graciously gave said baby to my friend for a ten-minute cuddle.
I couldn't agree more about spending the money on other forms of help. For the money it costs, you could probably hire Gordon Ramsey to cook you dinner every night.

Wisteria · 11/09/2007 20:13

Hmmm - Gordon in my kitchen

Madigan · 11/09/2007 21:01

have to say I don't regret having mat nurse - she has been great in many ways ... but her contract ends at the end of this week anyway.
chuckling at MIL reference ... had MIL to stay over the weekend - and that was utterly horrendous (quote: "You should leave your baby to cry for precisely 4 minutes before picking it up, or else it will just cry for attention"). what a nightmare.

have not read entire thread, but I used to wake dd up at 10-11pm and bf her to get her through the night. I then only fed her maybe once again in the night. I swear by that dream feed
Once I started ff at 17 weeks i gave her a bottle at this feed , until at about 24 weeks she stopped taking much and I stopped it, she then slept right through the night.

3andnomore · 11/09/2007 21:11

hm...can people please stop referring to a maternity nurse as "Nurse"....because most Maternity Nurses aren't (of course tehre might be some exceptions)...so, a real Nurse might be offended....

ChicPea · 09/10/2007 22:02

Interested to know how you found your maternity nurse Madigan. And congratulations BTW.

chipmonkeyPumpkinNorks · 09/10/2007 22:53

ChicPea, I think most Nanny agencies have a maternity nurse section, at least the online ones seem to. Never had the luxury myself!
Madigan, on "Bringing up Baby" this evening, Claire Verity was advocating waking the baby in order to feed them so they would be "full" and sleep through. She was also feeding them at 10 and then at 11.15pm to stuff yet more formula into them. I thought it was horrible to watch!

fairysnuff · 09/10/2007 23:13

Oh, I agree CMPN, I found it upsetting too
It looked like the same treatment the ducks get to get fois gras!!
joining the fantasy of Gordon Ramsay ripping off his shirt, drooling on keyboard....what is it about him?

Madigan, I agree with everyone else, don't let someone you are paying bully you into doing anything that you are remotely unhappy about, they are only small once, why spoil it with upset?
Good luck telling her though.

1dilemma · 09/10/2007 23:19
