God give us strength. Is it any wonder than bf is on the decline ?
With helpful comments , like the following :
"Mothers are not shown how to make up bottle feeds. Even if mothers breastfeed successfully, most babies will need a bottle at some point. "

Honestly, I despair.

yes but not if they are Gina babies Wallace! get with the programme.
GF says that if your baby is unsettled in the evening then they are hungry and you probably aren't producing enough milk. so best top them up with formula.
so endeth the lesson
Amen.

Ah....now I know!

FairyMum · 09/09/2007 23:14

Gawd, I just don't have th time for all this baby cuddling......

maisym · 09/09/2007 23:19

what a load of rubbish "advice" - so wrong about needing cuddling to sleep - I co-sleep & do attachment parent - what would they say about that!!!

TheDuchess · 09/09/2007 23:21

oh I am so glad to hear you all discuss this. I read this today and felt very guilty. I am still breastfeeding at 10 months and all I remember from those first few weeks is breastfeeding for hours on end.

I really thought today that perhaps the poor mite was starving. My baby was big at birth at now is on the 9th centile (or at least he was before I gave up going to the HV) and I had endless discussions from the in-laws who wanted me to top him up. Had to endure all sorts of comments today!

TheDuchess · 09/09/2007 23:22

Actually maisym I gave up going to the HV because I accidentally told her that I co-sleep. She really wasn't amused!

I read her book (well an abridged version free with a baby magazine) whilst pregnant. It is full of celeb endorsements; Gabby logan amongst many others. It sounded very sensible and I believed it, had bits underlined and everything. Consequently I tried not to feed my baby for 3hrs between feeds and endured a lot of screaming in the evenings when the poor love was probably starving hungry. There is no mention of cluster feeding in there at all. Fortunately RL BF friends and mumsnet put me straight. I stopped wearing a watch and bought a sling! I have BF her for 5 months now and the bottles and steriliser are untouched cluttering up my kitchen. Wish i never read that or frankly any other silly patronising parenting manuals.
