My baby was born 7lb 2 oz and has gained ever since and now at a6 weeks weighs 9lb 11 but has now dropped to 25th centile, should I be concerned?

He feeds at roughly 8am, 11am, 2pm, 5pm, 8pm, 1am & 5am.

He takes between 2.5-4oz each feed but is usually 3 or 4oz.

I can't really get more milk into him really as when he's done he's done.

Does he vomit/have signs of reflux after feeds? I'd definitely be speaking to my HV about it though from personal experience they don't look further into it til two centile lines are crossed (or three in my daughter's case).

He's not sick and doesn't seem in pain, sometimes seems to struggle with pooing but that's it.

I've got HV and DR appointments for 8 week check up next week I'll ask them then. He's never lost weight though so wasn't sure if it was normal to go between centiles?

Just looked at my 4 year old daughters red book and she went up and down and no one was worried about her

As I say they don't normally become concerned until they cross a second centile and my view is probably coloured by what happened with my youngest who crossed 3 centiles and no-one was concerned with the failure to thrive as she was ahead on her milestones - she had reflux, partially due to a lip tie that affected her latch and a UTI that caused vomiting as well (ended up standing my ground and being referred to a consultant who diagnosed the UTI and told us we'd got there just in time)

Some fluctuation is normal though and if he's not being sick, having foul poo nappies, got a rash or showing any other discomfort it's probably nothing to worry about but I'd definitely still check if the HV doesn't mention it at weigh-in

Stop worrying!! He's gaining weight. Some kids are born heavier than they end up, some grow loads at the start and level off. As long as they are gaining you're doing a great job.

Was he weighed on the same scales, at the same time of day? Are the scales calibrated?

cornishmama93 · 11/03/2020 07:46

I weighed him at a drop in clinic yesterday so proper scales and I assume they were correct as in the children's centre. We have our 6-8 week checks next week so I guess we'll see what they say then

Babies do fluctuate with their weight gain. Two centiles might be concerning but one isn’t at all.

Don’t fret about your baby’s weight gain, it’s not at all helpful to have babies weighed. Look instead at things like how contented they are, are they having wet and dirty nappies, are they growing out of their clothes.

I only had my first weighed because I thought you had to. I never bothered with my next two and they were fine.

I really wouldn’t worry, especially as he’s been weighed on different scales. It’s inky one centile Smile
