Tiny vampire demon baby

^ is what I've started calling DD, who at 16 weeks has developed the charming habit of smiling up at me during feeds, big, beautiful, emotional eye contact that fills my heart with joy and makes me feel like motherhood is the best gift i have ever received... and then biting down on my nipple as hard as she can. Followed by laughing hysterically (new skill, usually very cute) at my squeak of pain.

Intellectually i know she's not actually a psychopath, but it does feel a little bit like I'm being tortured emotionally and physically! I'm not sure I'll be able to keep breastfeeding if she keeps doing this, tbh. I tried the nipple shields i had when she was tiny, and she was having none of it.

Ouch!!!! When I fed mine and they did that I finished that feed! Could you do something similar?

SomeoneElseEntirelyNow · 25/02/2020 08:09

I would, but sometimes she does it literally straight away, and as much as my boobs hurt i don't want her to starve. Also she's not even 4 months yet so i don't think she can connect "if i bite mummy i don't get fed" with "i won't bite mummy"

Is she teething? Mine did this for a week or so around each new tooth appearing. It was awful - you have my sympathy.

When biting happens, show no reaction and withdraw breast. It will take some time but they learn.

LemonScentedStickyBat · 25/02/2020 08:11

It will go against your instinct, but briefly pushing her towards you will block her nose and she will let go instantly. Hopefully it’s a phase that will go away quickly

If it's teething or a game, offer her a chew toy first - let her bite that and smile/laugh etc. then offer the breast and hopefully she will have it out of her system? Sympathies though, biting is not fun!

I had this. Every time he did it, I took him off the breast. Stopped eventually.

Push her face into the breast so she releases and say 'no' firmly.

Both mine did this a couple of times and my excruciatingly loud scream made them burst into tears and stop doing it. I did extended breastfeeding with dc2 and never had a problem again.
