Need help - DS pulling off when bf and screaming

DS is 3 weeks old now and first week bf was fine, second week he got wind in the evening and would clench up and cry and now going into the third week we have a new problem, during some of the feeds , not all though he latches on really well and is desperate to feed and starts sucking away and then after about 3 - 4 big gulps he pulls off and starts screaming, not in a wind type of way but it looks like he doesn't like the taste, then he's desperate to latch on again so we try again and then it happens all over again. Does anyone have any ideas of why this has started? As I said it's not every feed, only kind of every other one or something like that. It's pretty stressful when it happens, so need help!

Very quick let down? When I was bfeeding this used to happen a lot with DS1, esp on one side in particular. I only cottoned on when I saw it spurt across the room at great speed - I don't think he could cope and pulled off and cried. When on for a while. Not sure what the advice would be, maybe expressing a bit before you start (a faff) or feeding from the non spuring side, letting it spurt and then let him on the spurting side?

went on for a while even.

(one glass of wine in)

i have this too - and agree with niceglass - he probably just cant work out why its coming so fast now. ds (4 weeks old) does this at some feeds particularly if its been a hwile since the last one, but once the first rush goes past, he settles down to it. Not any more help than niceglass - but i would go with hand expressing a wee bit just to get the initial rush away.

I found my lo did this this morning - also 3 weeks. And same thing niceglasses, when he pulled away milk was everywhere!!
He soon calmed and fed fine.

He used to have this problem last week when it was coming too fast and he did as you guys say and pulled away and milk was everywhere, but this new trick seems to be when he has been feeding for about 10 mins so my boob is pretty empty and when he pulls away there isn't much if any milk there. when I express the whole feed and feed him from a bottle he doesn't do it at all.

I had this problem with DD. I found that if you can lean back a bit when feeding, then it seems to slow down the flow.

My DS is 16 weeks old now, and for the last 2 months or so I have to stop and burp him in the middle of most b/feeds, so it could be that as well. He'll feed then stop and cry, and I know now to sit him up and burp him, huge one comes out then he goes straight back to feed. My DD2 was the same, and I mistakenly thought she didn'tlike breast feeding for some reason, and eventually stopped cos she didn't scream when havin a bottle. The lessons you learn!

Yeah prob a fast let down/gas thing. Lots of burping and try more upright feeding positions. If he guzzles and splutters at the beginning of the feed due to fast let down he's prob taken in loads of air.

my ds did this too. winding him seemed to help although not always. he just grew out of it.

good luck

trixymalixy · 11/09/2007 19:36

My DS did this.

It turns out he has a dairy allergy, but other things that were suggested were ear infection, congested sinuses and reflux.

kitty,
this link is very helpful;
baby cries and fusses during nursing - what is the problem?
