How much milk?

My LG is 14 months old, how much milk should she be drinking a day? I just give her 3 soppy cups a day after food. Is this about right? Just stopped bf at 13 months.

I think it's 300 ml but there is more information in this guide from the Caroline Walker Trust Smile

naomi81 · 12/02/2020 15:59

Oh no, think I will have to start cutting down, think I've been giving her 300ml x 3 times a day 😕 thanks x

Its around 350mls or 2 portions of dairy

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 12/02/2020 16:09

You cannot specify the amount because it depends on diet such as cheese and yoghurt etc. . 3 x 300mls is such a lot! How is her eating? At this age I would be expecting more like some with breakfast cereal and a drink, water with lunch and tea, and a milk drink in the evening. No milk between meals. Be sure to have calcium rich foods

dementedpixie · 12/02/2020 16:12

Unless you have very big sippy cups then you're probably not giving 300mls at a time as that would be 10oz of milk.

naomi81 · 12/02/2020 20:07

Phew I rang the health visitor as bf I am not with the whole ml/oz thing 🤪 turns out a sippy cup is 6oz and she can 21 ozs a day, so we are slightly under but she has yogurt and cheese etc so looks like we are doing okay 👌🏻 thanks everyone for you feedback 😊

The max she should have is around 20oz. The recommended amount is around 12oz.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 12/02/2020 21:02

I thought 300 ml was more like 10 floz? I think your HV is maybe a little outdated with her advice too? 21 floz is over twice the recommended amount at this age.

If she’s having 6floz, 3 times a day, plus milk in cereal, I would cut out at least one of these drinks.

dementedpixie · 12/02/2020 21:04

I said 350mls which is closer to 12oz

dementedpixie · 12/02/2020 21:10

Although different pages on the nhs site gives different amounts from age 1. One page says 300mls and another says 350mls.

Selfsettling3 · 12/02/2020 21:12

She needs 350mg of calcium a day. This is 3 portions.

dementedpixie · 12/02/2020 21:15

Children between the ages of1 and3 need to havearound 350mg of calcium a day. About 300ml of milk (just over half a pint) would provide this.

Feeding your baby: from 12 months

Your child will now be eating 3 meals a day containing avariety of different foods, including:

  • a minimum of 4 servings a day of starchy food, such as potatoes, bread and rice
  • a minimum of 4 servings a day of fruit and vegetables
  • a minimum of 350ml milk or 2 servings of dairy products (or alternatives)
  • a minimum of 1 serving a day of protein from animal sources (meat, fish and eggs) or 2 from vegetable sources (dhal, beans, chickpeas and lentils)

Although different pages on the nhs site gives different amounts from age 1. One page says 300mls and another says 350mls. I’m finding this as well tonight. The link I always used to post said 300 ml from 1 to 2 years, this one says “Try to give your child at least 350ml (12oz) of milk a day, or 2 servings of foods made from milk, such as cheese, yoghurt or fromage frais.” Added in with my maths inability, it’s ever likely I’m struggling Smile

Whether it’s 10 or 12 floz OP, your HV isn’t sticking to the NHS guidelines. Did you manage to read the Caroline Walker Guide Smile

naomi81 · 12/02/2020 22:20

Yes read the Caroline walker guide, is she a baby feeding guru? 300mls doesn't seem a lot. The health visitor went through her weight etc and said that it's near enough right what I am giving her, she seems happy and is only on 75th centile so I don't think she's having to much atm. Not sure if milk intake increases as they grow bigger? Also if I was still breastfeeding I would have zero knowledge of how much milk she was getting, so who knows what the right amount is?!

Milk intake tends to decrease as they take more food. If you're happy and your dd is happy then that's all that matters

Yes read the Caroline walker guide, is she a baby feeding guru?. There is some information about the Trust here Smile
