Formula feeding while out

Hi there, I have a 10 days baby and I have been breastfeeding, with small exceptions when we had to top up with formula, or ocasionally one feed overnight with formula. I am not comfortable enough yet to breastfeed while out and about so I will either express milk or use milk powder, anyway, I read the best way to make a bottle of milk powder is to have a flask of hot water, a cup of measured milk powder and the bottle sterilised, my question is can you recommend a good flask that will keep the water hot?

Contigo flask. If you're in a restaurant request a pot of hot water. It's far easier to breastfeed though. Have a look at yourself in a mirror as you feed, you can see pretty much nothing.
Congratulations!

If I'm out I use the ready made formula and a sterilised bottle. If baby likes it warm ask the cafe for hot water. Also It did mean at the beginning I threw away a lot.
My friend used to take boiled water out in the bottle, then add powder from a little container already measured for how much water that was in the bottle.
Most mums I know that breastfeed don't really care when out. Use a blanket or large muslin if it makes you feel better.

You can also buy ready made formula in little cartons. I used to use these when out and about. The only problem is that in the beginning while your baby is so small there will be a lot of waste as once the carton is opened the milk will only stay fresh for a couple of hours.

I also used to plan outings around feeding times so that I wouldn't have to worry for a couple of hours. I would feed the baby before leaving the house so that he/she was content for a couple of hours.

When out there are also lots of ways to breastfeed discreetly. You can do it in your car, go into changing rooms in shops or even in toilets. Sometimes this is much more easier than preparing a bottle when you are out.

You'll be fully bottle feeding by four weeks

I both breast and bottle feed out and about.

For bottles of formula, I also use ready-made.

It took me about 4-5 weeks to be confident breastfeeding out of the house, so don't feel you have to do it straight away! The first couple of times I went to a breastfeeding drop in, do you have anything similar near you? Really helps with your confidence.

@DoneAdulting why do you say that? Plenty of people mix feed

I have to agree with PP watch yourself breast feed in the mirror. it's so much more convenient to breast feed when out.
Most people are too busy getting on with their days to even notice. Only comments I've ever had have been positive and only when it has been noticeable as I've neeed to feed in close proximity to other e.g. in the GP waiting room.

You'll be fully bottle feeding by four weeks... So...?

What i do is.. I fill the thermos with warm water and put it in the baby bag along with bottle that goes with us every time we go out with the baby and whenever i need to feed her, i just pour the warm water in the bottle and make him the mlk.

RhymingRabbit3 · 08/03/2020 07:51

I would use ready mix if it's only going to be occasional. Much less faff. However when you get the hang of it, breastfeeding is far easier. Practise at places like baby groups where nobody will bat an eye at a breastfeeding mum

RhymingRabbit3 · 08/03/2020 07:52

P.s.if you're keen to breastfeed long term its advised not to give formula top ups until 6 weeks as it can considerably reduce your supply.

I trained my babies on room temp bottles. Saved a lot of faffing around. Just get the bottle out of the bag, add powder, shake and drink. Or make up the milk with hot water and let it cool and drink it at that temp. You have to be careful that the made up milk doesn't get too warm but room temp for a couple of hours is fine (or keep in a cool bag if you are really worried or will be in a hot place).

Sorry about the big link Confused

Also, I used Dr Browns bottles which fitted in the bottle bags perfectly.

I would just steralise the bottles and pop then in the bags until feeding time.
