Well peanut butter actually. I am craving it sooooooooo much. I have avoided it all through pregnancy and now LO is 1 was wondering if I could now have it. Anyone know?

yes

McEdam · 30/08/2007 20:24

Of course you can!

Forgot to say - she has mild excema. I am sure I read somewhere that you had to avoid peanuts if there was any indication a child may be allergic to stuff.

Have a look here

I have asthma, eczema, hayfever and allergies to walnuts and pecans, so I avoided those nuts plus peanuts in pregnancy and mostly whilst breastfeeding.

But I must confess I had overwhelming cravings for peanut butter too, and I decided the risk when breastfeeding an older child in my case only being fed once a day was not going to be big. So I now scoff the nutty stuff regularly - I started when dd2 was about 20 months I guess. Personal decision, not based on any kind of scientific evidence you understand.

Thanks all.

Pidge - I may leave it a while then and then give it a go when she is older. Trouble is how would you know if she was allergic if she wasn't exposed to nuts. It's a difficult one.

I'm desperate for some salted peanuts
Have been since July 2006

So I sympathise

Hmmm. DD has intolerances to dairy and wheat, so I've been scoffing peanut butter as virtually the only filling thing left that I can think of to eat... as well as mixed nuts. She seems fine with it. Having read Pidge's link I just hope I haven't 'done a boo boo'. HV said to act on instinct on this one.

Pidge · 04/09/2007 21:14

hobnob - it's all in the way you read the link - I personally interpreted their "you MAY wish to avoid peanuts while breastfeeding" as pretty wishy washy and more or less a license to continue my peanut butter habit now that dd2 is pretty big! I think basically no-one knows the answer on this one yet.

I've found that I can't eat peanuts because every time I have done, my dd throws up spectacularly. I found this out after getting some Crunchy Nut cornflakes in. Other nuts and seeds are okay though. I would love some peanut butter, mmmm....

When I did a childcare course at college i was told you could test for peanut allergy on an older baby by spreading a little bit on their arm, it'll come up in a rash if they're allergic. Although if they're very allergic it could be more serious than just a rash but I suppose you're gonna find out somehow and finding out through a skin test rather than them eating it is likely to be less severe. It also may not tell you if its only a mild allergy. And its probably not that reliable. Okay as a rough guide though before introducing them to their diet I guess.

Try cashew nut butter instead if its just peanuts you're avoiding, not quite the same but still bloody lovely!

well, I haven't had paenut butter for the last 7 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, 1 or 2 peanuts may have slipped the net (mouth) but trying to avoid. I know the eveidence is poor, but it can't do any harm it may do some good (have hay fever, ds eczema )

Is that right Pesha? What counts as an older baby? Could do it this afternoon just before I take him to clinic
