My ds is 2 weeks old and is suffering from wind after every feed, he feeds settles for about 5 mins and then starts arching his back and looking so distressed and there is nothing I can do to get a burb out of the poor little guy. What do you think about infacol? the HV suggested it but it feels very early on in his life to be giving him medicine but on the other hand if it going to help him stop being in pain I want to try it. Any advice?

I felt the same with ds. He was b/fed, which I had worked v hard at, and here I was putting gunk into his mouth. But then again, if your baby is in genuine distress, it is your job as mummy to do what you can to relieve that. It sounds like it would help, so I would say give it a go.

TheArmadillo · 26/08/2007 21:40

I gave it to ds early.

It has no known side effects and is perfectly safe to take from birth if I remember correctly.

There are other things you can use though, like fennel tea.

IF you're bfding then you drink it.

If bottle feeding then you make it, cool it and then feed it to them in a bottle.

didn't work for mine children, but from what I have heard all the remedies work for different children and you have to find out what works for yours.

hope he feel better soon it is heartbreaking, both my ds's suffered but not dd

MabelMay · 26/08/2007 21:44

Definitely give it a go. It's not going to harm your baby in any way and it could end up making his and your life so much easier.

I used infacol very early on with my ds because he was suffering so much after each feed. It worked brilliantly. You have to drip it on the back of their tongue before each feed. Just be aware that it takes a couple of days to start working properly.

But please don't worry about it affecting your baby in any adverse way, as it won't. Can be used from birth. MM X

Bewilderbeast · 26/08/2007 21:44

try a vibrating chair. IMHO it worked better than infacol.

EvangelinesMum · 26/08/2007 21:44

It didnt work for my dd either- I just had to wait until she got bigger and could bring up the wind herself with our help. My friend swears by Gripe Water which you can give them from one month - however I found this didnt help much either as dd just kept spitting it out. Both worth a try though I would say.

mummymagic · 26/08/2007 21:44

Worked for mine. Not sure if it was psychological (for me, I mean!) or did actually help but she seemed to calm down. Didn't like taking it though.

My DS had terrible wind in the first few weeks so I gave him infacol from about 10 days I think. It was the only way I got any sleep as he just writhed around next to me for an hour after every feed at night.

Actually I have a whole bottle here (unopened, in sealed box) which I would happily send you as it will just go to waste otherwise and I hate waste. CAT me if you want it

mrsdelboy · 26/08/2007 22:05

I used it with my DD from about 3 weeks old because she had terrible colic. It lasted until she was about 14 weeks old. We tried everything but stuck with infacol because HV recomended it.

With DS, I had some in the cupboard before he was even born and started using it about day 5! He also had a bit of colic but nothing like DD. I still don't know if infacol actually did anything but I would say it's worth a go.

And remember, it should only last about 3 months.......

vole3 · 27/08/2007 02:38

I never knew that about fennel tea, but that explains why my DS has only had 1 or 2 episodes of colicky crying in his 10 weeks as I started drinking to help supply

LieselVentouse · 27/08/2007 05:10

infacol is fab and its well worth it to not see your child in pain

choolie · 27/08/2007 10:18

Oh gosh, i stressed so much about not giving DS anything with additives, chemical sounding names etc. and caused myself so much stress by doing so, trying to source natural products etc. We caved in the end and gave infacol and although we didn't find it helped our DS, it made me see that these things are there for a reason and if you genuinely need them, it is ok to use them. We actually found gripe water helped him more, but I don't know if that's ok from birth.

A friend used colief, which is much more expensive and a faff if BF as you have to mix it with the milk before they feed, but she did find it worked really well and is more natural if that's a real concern.

BTW have you tried different positions for burbing him? we found holding him with his belly flat on our arm almost like he's lying on it really helped.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 27/08/2007 10:22

Luckily, only Ds1 had it.
Used infacol but i personally dont think it made any difference. He certainly still cried from 6 till 10, even after we had 'built it up' in his system.
The only thing i found made any difference was changing his brand of milk (mummy didnt have her own brand ) and using colief.
Also, doc brown bottles - godsend! dont let the air down there in the first place!

REIDmylips · 27/08/2007 10:23

we used infacol with ds, would thoroughly recommend it. I can understand why you would be a little reluctant to use it because of some of the ingredients, but it really helped with ds wind.

good luck x

kittypower · 28/08/2007 09:46

we went out and bought some yesterday and started in from lunchtime feed onwards and so far no improvement at all, spent hours last night pacing the floor trying to settle him. how do you do the winding by lying him on your arm? i haven't tried that yet but he has his legs so tightly clenched up to his tummy not sure how physically do it.

back arching is a classic sign of reflux which won't be helped by Infacol
don't want to upset you, but DS's silent reflux was mistaken for wind for ages

is your DS sicky, have trouble lying flat? would have a chat with your HV if things don't improve

absandme · 28/08/2007 10:40

My dd had a touch of colic & I was lucky enough to go on a baby massage course via my hv. One of the sections covered a colic massage which I found really really good & seemed to work a treat.
Prehaps you could ask your hv if there are any baby massage courses in your area if you fancy giving it a go?

Bodkin · 28/08/2007 12:32

Been using it religiously since DD2 was about 3 weeks old - not sure how much it is helping as she is still quite screamy and farty (!) in the evenings but much more mellow in the day than she was, and much easier to settle. That could just be developmental though, but too scared to stop giving it in case it is helping, iyswim!
