Introducing formula after breastfeeding

Hi Mommys!

I'm new here and posting for the first time (however, I've been reading this discussion board a lot and found heaps of invaluable info!).

I have a 5 month old baby and starting work in about a weeks time. My baby is exclusively breastfed but I want to transition into partially formula/breastfeeding. The reason is: expressing at work is nearly impossible. My baby is trying hard to take a formula and already learned to drink from a bottle. I'm very happy with our efforts and results so far.

However, we have already tried 2 different formulas - Hipp organic and Aptamil. My baby took them for a couple of days each. But every time she takes a formula she gets mild rash and red cheeks. She also kind of vomits a little too (never did with bf).

I've read about adaptation period and also cow milk protein allergy. I don't know which one we have.

Has anyone here had a similar situation? Should we stop trying with formulas and start weaning instead (almost 6 months) or should we be patient and hope it gets better? I know there are a lot of hypoallergenic formulas but I don't know if it's worth investing in them...

Thank you!

All formulas are broadly similar (they have to be, strict controls). True CMPA is not common. Can you speak to your HV or GP?

What are your shifts like? Will you still be able to mainly breastfeed?

Our baby had this rash around his cheeks from the lactose jn apatamil. We went lactose free and all was great!

I believe it's not allergy as I've been drinking a lot of milk and my baby has always been fine. I'll be breastfeeding in the morning, then at 5, bedtime and nighttime. I only need to substitute 2 feedings.

I'm sorry op but if you've got even the vaguest suspicion it's something to do with being allergic to cow's milk then you really need to see the GP, if anything just to get it ruled out / peace of mind. My 16 month old has dairy issues and has had some severe reactions in the past and honestly I wouldn't wish it on anyone else.

Oh god, don't scare me ladies! Will get checked out. I thought (for some reason) that formula "allergies" are a common thing.

Maybe try a comfort formula which is lower lactose (not lactose free). My son struggled when we switched to formula but was quite happy on cow and gate comfort milk.
