Do toddlers really self wean during the second trimester or am I quite likely to end up tandem feeding?

Initially you get a drop in supply, but that should recover. From about 16 weeks you'll start producing colostrum, and that changes the taste. Some DCs decide they don't like it and self-wean at that point, others figure it's all good and keep right on. No particular way to know which yours will do in advance, I think. If they do keep nursing, worth bearing in mind that the colostrum may/will lead to some pretty runny nappies.

it will change in taste! you could ask if dc wants to try big dc milk!

What is big dc milk? Cow's milk?

full fat cows milk

my dd1 self weaned with a little encouragement in the first 12 weeks. My milk dried up very fast.

policywonk · 25/08/2007 17:54

My milk dried up at 5 months, but DS1 was quite happy to carry on sucking on a dry breast. I ended up forcibly weaning him, because he was using me as a giant human dummy, and just wanted to keep the nipple in his mouth all night long given that there was no inconvenient liquid coming out of it, so my sleep was getting really disturbed. Hwever, forcibly weaning a toddler when you are five months pregnant is NOT something I would recommend! In hindsight, I wish I had stuck it out and tandem-fed.

I'm 37 weeks. ds (2.3) did reduce his feeding mid-pregnancy, and I wondered whether he was about to self-wean, but he then stepped it up again - asks for milk several times a day, but very rarely wants to be fed at night. He has really reduced the length of his feeds, though (with some encouragement from me - I don't want to wean him but I notice I am finding longer feeding sessions difficult atm). No doubt there will be at least a period of tandem feeding.

My milk dried up when I was about 8 weeks - was totally gone! Ds (who was 15 months) started headbanging, biting, crying and drinking huge amounts of other drinks as there was obv nothing coming out of me.

It was the first I knew I was pg! (unplanned!)

Have you looked at www.kellymom.com It has some interesting things on tandem feeding

Snarf02 · 27/08/2007 17:03

i carried on bf til 16 wks pg had an open mind for how long would carry on for and whether to tandem feed but wanted it to be right for both of us to stop. At 15 wks started to get painful so dropped the morning feed and 4 days later did not ask for booby at night so stopped when i was going to drop the night feed a few wks later. Did not feel engorged or anything so dont think i had much milk there for her when she was feeding once i hit the second trimester. Was sad but felt better physically for it as was having quite a tough pregnancy.

Not sure how lo will react when her baby brother who is due soon will be having lots of booby but we keep talking about it so she can get used to the idea.
