Please reassure me this is mastitis and not cancer

I've had a sore breast for a few days, it's felt tender and hard to touch. I'm breastfeeding so assumed clogged duct. Yesterday I suddenly felt really unwell, shaky and fluey. Breast is still sore, and today I have now had a big lump appear in my armpit which is painful to touch.

Dr google has terrified me about inflammatory breast cancer. Going to go GP in the morning but can somebody help me relax enough to actually sleep tonight? BlushSad

To add, it's my left breast that's sore but the lump is in my right armpit

How old is your child? Sounds exactly like mastitis, I'd be thinking that long before cancer.

Nobhobs · 03/12/2019 21:28

@Falafel19 I did for the past couple of days it's the armpit lump that's freaked me out! He's 5 months

I had mastitis and it was exactly as you’re describing.

Falafel19 · 03/12/2019 21:31

The lump is very common with blocked duct/mastitis as it's the blockage spreading. Put heat on it and feed baby as much as possible from it overnight. Good luck! I came close to mastitis twice but dodged it, it's not pleasant but hopefully once you see gp you'll get sorted fairly quickly.

Redcrayons · 03/12/2019 21:32

Way way more likely to be mastitis than cancer.

I had it, my boobs were hard and Sore. Do they feel warm to touch as well?

Stop googling and wait till you see the doctor. A few days of antibiotics and you'll be back to normal.

If you already feel so unwell you need to see a doctor ASAP - mastitis can turn serious very very fast.

Twolittlespeckledfrogs · 03/12/2019 21:36

Sounds exactly like mastitis. Get to the GP ASAP for some antibiotics. It tends to progress very quickly once you’re feeling unwell and have a lump but equally resolves pretty quickly with treatment.

I’d consider out of hours if you have a high temperature or are feeling really bad.

thereplycamefromanchorage · 03/12/2019 21:39

That's how mastitis was for me. Would second previous poster that you might want to contact out of hours gp for antibiotics, as mastitis can make you feel really grim.

winniesanderson · 03/12/2019 21:42

Definitely sounds like mastitis. Keep feeding from the sore side as much as you can. Dangle feeding if possible. Warm compresses can encourage the milk to flow. Plus lots of water and paracetamol if you can to keep your temperature down. If there's an out of hours near you I would try to get to it if possible.

I'm not a medical professional, but wonder if the arm pit swelling could be a swollen lymph node? I've recently had them in my neck after an infection.

Nobhobs · 03/12/2019 21:44

I still feel a bit off, but nowhere near as shaky/fluey as I did yesterday. Boob still sore and armpit lump only appeared (or become painful) in the past hour or so and is really really sore. Can barely move that arm without wincing. At home alone with sleeping 5 month old, so would rather avoid dragging him to out of hours. Or is it that serious?

Def sounds like mastitis but don't see that as a phew moment. You still need do see the doc ASAP
