We prepared water in bottles in advance, then tipped in the powder and warmed as needed.

Plenty of advice from the manufacturers of the power, if your scared use the pre-made stuff with a screw cap.

I screwed up so many bottles, heck our one even found a days old milk under the bed and drank it, all was fine.

Have you checked on the nhs site, they give advice. It,s best to follow them as thats more up to date then some dodgy advice you get here. Water should ideally be freshly boiled, ad not reboiled. If out and about the ready made formula may be a better suggestion as if using cooled boiled water it,s not going to kill bacteria in the powder.

You still need to use fresh boiled water with formula for as long as you are using it. For out and about you can put some freshly boiled water in a flask.

When I FF my first born, we took a flask of boiled water out and some pots with pre measured amounts of formula in, then made up the bottle when we were out. Once they are made up they’re fine for 2 hours so plenty of time to cool, or we’d stop in a cafe and ask for a jug of ice to stick to bottle in to cool the milk.
The water should be fresh and boiled and then poured in to the bottle to make up the milk within 30 mins of boiling. The important bit is that formula mixes with HOT water to kill any bugs in formula- formula isn’t sterile. Hope this helps. X
